Learn how to completely empty your bladder and overcome incomplete bladder emptying using the correct Physiotherapy position and technique. Michelle from https://www.pelvicexercises.com.au shows how to start bladder emptying, improve flow and empty completely.

This information is suited to viewers who have:
- Inability to completely empty (incomplete emptying or urinary retention)
- Difficulty starting emptying (hesitancy)
- Slow bladder stream (slow flow)

Normal Bladder Emptying
When you empty your bladder you should be able to easily start the flow and it should be strong and continuous without needing to strain. You should have a feeling of completely emptied your bladder when finished.

Straining to empty your bladder can damage your pelvic floor which can worsen bladder problems. Retained urine can increase the risk of bladder infection.

If you find that you can’t empty your bladder, go to the hospital emergency department. Urinary retention can cause bladder overstretching and serious long-term bladder problems.

1. Bladder Emptying Position
*If you have normal sensation then empty your bladder when you feel an appropriate urge to empty
*Start sitting on the toilet seat and never hover or stand leaning over the toilet seat
*Your feet should be supported on the ground or on a footstool
*Your legs and hips should be apart
*Support your trunk by leaning forward and resting your hands or elbows/forearms on your thighs
*Keep the inwards curve in your lower back while emptying your bladder

2. Bladder Emptying Technique
*If you’re having trouble initiating bladder emptying then you may try turning on a tap. Sometimes the sound of tricking water can help start voiding.
*When your bladder has started emptying keep leaning forwards and relax your bladder opening. Allow your lower tummy to relax and bulge forwards at the same time until your bladder is empty.
*Always avoid straining.

If you sense that your bladder isn’t completely empty, then you can try any of the following double void techniques:
1. Rock side to side before trying again
2. Stand up and rotate your hips as if hula hoop
3. Walk around for 15-30 seconds before sitting back down and repeat voiding
4. Use both hands above your pubic bone to gently press inwards with your fingers over your bladder

Tips to Improve Bladder Emptying
*Avoid overfilling your bladder because when it’s too full. This means knowing that you need to empty 3-4 hourly (or around 250-400 mls of urine) depending on your fluid intake
*Stay well hydrated by drinking steadily during the day rather than all at once. Doing this helps you avoid sudden bladder filling
*Take your time to empty your bladder completely rather than rushing
*Avoid emptying just in case
*If you have trouble emptying your bladder because of reduced sensation you may need to go on a timed emptying program. This involves attempting to empty your bladder regardless of whether or not you feel the urge.
*Reduce your intake of diuretics such as caffeine and alcohol because they draw extra fluid into the bladder.

I feel really out of place with this problem, I’ve never met anyone my age with it, I’m 18 and this past months I’ve realized I can’t fully empty my bladder, I’ll try this and i hope it helps because it’s honestly annoying and after knowing more of its consequences it’s scary tbh

Thank you great advice. How about making a video of a relapsed bladder that holds 100cc or more in the bladder, and it doesn't 'let go'.

I think I have acute urinary retention based on the symptoms I read on the internet. I don't know whether it's very serious but I'm concerned and I also don't want to go to a doctor but I expect it to go away through these remedies.

Dear Michelle, does that bladder emptying position and technique also applicable for men ? I am guessing it is, but not sure due to the physiology of men and women is slightly different. Please confirm.

I had a complete pelvic floor repair surgery, urethral sling, colpopexy? The whole nine and after that ,my urinary frequency increased. The urethral sling was too tight, so I had a revision surgery to make it looser. I also had mesh exposure which some of got removed. I felt like my insides had barbwire. The doctor was already saying good luck when you snease and pee on yourself. Im like, ok, we will see... I didn't have urinary incontinence to begin with. I had the opposite. I had to push and squeeze my bladder hard to be able to empty it. But he decided to give me a urethral sling.
It was a nightmare to wake up 30 times to use the bathroom. Could never empty my bladder. I almost went crazy, sleep deprived, exhausted. As a quick solution I bought a kid potty and put right beside my bed and Instead of the cold trip to the toilet, I peed on my little potty. I noticed that by squatting low to the ground, I was able to void more completely (Hello, cavewoman!) In my case, I have IBS c which makes my bowels push imy bladder as well. I'm always full of air in my gi for that reason. Long story short, I don't void nearly as much at Night, but I didn't get rid of the potty..😅😅😅
Thanks for the tips!!!!

I am very happy i stumbled onto this video because maybe my problem is NOT as bad as i though it was ....

My urgency is very often due to holding it yoo long....

And after watching this video and thinking about the "Big Picture"...

I am ADHD and as such do not "focus" well anyway.... And because of how my mind races i have days that i probably void way too little.... And on the days that i go "too much", I'm probably not completely emptying....

I used to get very frequently UTI and now understand better why.

This is a great video. Such practical solutions. I learned a couple of important things from her. I was voiding "just in case" before I went out which isn't good to do. I liked her positioning too, it worked for me because leaning forward it pressed on the bladder. I'm 81 and I am not going to see the doctor about this. I don't want medicine and I definitely don't want surgery, the two main treatments from the doctor. I also have decided that I only have voiding dysfunction and I can manage it rather than imagine that something worse is wrong. Thank you Michelle!
