Would you say the sliding action requires less pressure than say a 9mm? I ask because the wife has weak wrists and grip

Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy.

This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR.

This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.

Yep, whatever caliper you are comfortable with works - period. Your chances are 1 in a million you will ever need to use it so you might as well be confident.

I think it's good that manufacturer's try different catrigase and do different things with them. I have 22LR, 380, 9MM, 10MM, 45ACP, 41Mag. and now I have a Walthers WMP 22MAG and I really like it but I do wish the bullets were a bit cheaper and that's why I don't have a 5.7 price and availability. Good job on your review

My old mentor is 92 years old and he had to defended himself 7 years ago with his 22 WMR Ruger LCRx. He was 85 and his arthritic hands had just started acting up on him back then. He went out to let his ducks run free in the duck yard and some homeless wackadoodle was behind the duck shed and tried to rush him demanding money. Well he shot him 3 times with that Ruger LCRx 22 WMR and it disabled the guy and he was begging for an ambulance. Dude is still in prison and using a colostomy bag. Not my first choice; however if it was the only choice / best choice, I could make, I would be confident for sure.

I have an 8round 3 inch revolver ( Taurus 942M ) no FTE, no FTF, and if the round doesn’t go boom 💥 then I just pull the trigger again for a fresh round. You just gotta love a revolver! when it comes down to rimfire cartridges.

In an extended firefight, capacity means more chances for a hit that's not just lethal, but immediately lethal.

Granted, methheads just break all the rules so something closer to what you'd use to hunt deer and have a decent standard capacity is probably better

The unreliability to me is not the shape, but rather the rimmed design possibly lacking primer in air pockets. Revolvers counter this.

Twenty two magnum will break the human skull and kill an adversary. Its lethality is not an issue. Affordability of bulk ammo will allow someone with a .22WMR pistol to practice cost effectively and hone their accuracy to a superior standard.
I’d rather gunfight an inexperienced shooter with a 9mm than someone who can put a 40 grain round in my eyeball with their first or second shot in a high stress scenario. Just my 2 cents.

Just finished watching to the end of the video and I can provide one answer to your question on what niche this might fill" my wife currently has a Walther in 22LR that she enjoys shooting. My hope was it would act as the "gateway drug" to trying other calibers, but thus far, I have had no luck in getting her to enjoy other/more powerful calibers. I tried letting her shoot my 1911's in 45ACP, a 9mm Ruger, a 357 magnum revolver with 38spl, a 1911 in 380ACP, a S&W EZ in 380 ACP, and none of them were something she enjoyed (I even found an old Beretta in 25ACP, but its just too small to hold comfortably.) So, this might be the ticket to getting her to enjoy something more powerful than 22LR. Wish me luck!

Now that there are several manufacturers making 22WMR pistols, have the ammo manufacturers started making loads that are more pistol oriented (probably using powder designed to burn completely in shorter barrels?) I think I had heard in 22LR reviews that the Punch line was engineered for it??), but was wondering if there are others.

I'm purchasing one. Observation, some of the cycling issues with lower grain ammunition can be caused by hand grip position. If your grip interferes AT ALL with the slide moving rearward, it can cause improper performance with cycling. Keep the side of your hand OFF the slide. Better yet, use a heavier grain Bullitt.

Nice review of the Walther. I'll take .22 Mag all day in a rifle. As a self defense round, a person had better know what ammo is absolutely the most reliable in any auto pistol, especially .22! Also a person had better be very good with shot placement in the head with the .22Mag (or .22LR)
Ask any cop how much lead someone can absorb when strung out on drugs and coming after you in a rage.

Looks like the issue with having optics comes from specific configuration of ammunition, particularly slug weight. Can you summarize which slug weights and tip type (hollow point vs. ball) that worked and did not work when the optics was added?

With such low recoil .....why the RMR? Why design a full size 22 mag pistol when clearly a much smaller package works well vis a vis the PMR 30? Seems the answer is that it is a more affordable training pistol along with the new S&W.

So I'm looking to buy my 1st pistol soon and was very interested in this 22magnum for target shooting.
Would you recommend it ?
Or is there something else?

My first thought with the concept of 22 WMR as a self defense cartridge is that 5.7x28 exists. The 5.7 is a centerfire cartridge. Hell, there are more options on the market today for pistols chambered in the round. I want one of the Walther WMP's but mostly just because I want a 22 Magnum that isn't a revolver. Just would be for range fun though.

@volkssturm9694
@volkssturm9694 - 08.05.2023 06:49

The plain and simple answer is YES , the 22 magnum is definitely at the starting point of being adequate for a self defense round. The penetrate is exceptional for what it is since it's such a high velocity round, then you have 22 mag ammo made for self defense as well. The Walther WMP is probably the most satisfying pistol I have to shoot out of 13 others, being 9mm, 40 SW, 357 sig, mag, 10mm, 45 ACP, 22LR, 22 mag is like the 5.7 , or close to it without ammo piercing abilities .

I own this gun. I have a trailer in Eastern PA with other trailers in proximity. Without an optic & considering over penetration. I feel it's a good option for a 'Grab & Go' situation. I've sold guns in crowded NW NJ for 12 years so this is not a new revelation. Help that helps.
