I would rather they come up with a new studio display with pro motion (120hz) and thunderbolt 5

I also don’t understand all these. I bought this just to connect with my Samsung 75 inch QLED smart tv and mount it on my wall just to listen to jazz music and watch online movies. To me it’s fine. I just love Apple products so I bought it with the Samsung smart tv to wall mounted it on my bedroom wall. Just for entertainment use only. For movies and music only. Same goes for my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I bought it for calls and texting only. For my everyday work use only. The design looked nice, so I bought it…..

I hope so. my M1 Ultra is so far good enough for what I need. The only way I will splurge for an M4 Ultra is if the performance is at least double.

will the M4 Pro Mac Mini be the best value Mac again? Or just the M4 Mac Mini? Will gaming finally be viable on Macs?

Nah, then there was chip shortage so instead of making completely new chip, they might wanted to do this way

With the recent M4 leaks regarding AI, I really hope this is true. If Apple just comes out with an M3 Ultra, which I am sure would already look pretty amazing even if it just followed their previous method giving us 32 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. I am not sure how people would feel knowing an AI centric M4 Max would literally be just a few months away. I don't know if I expect much from the M4 in terms of CPU or GPU bumps but with this "AI" focus it probably means we are getting the first neural engine upgrade since the M1 and that they may be trying to be competitive with Nvidia. That in itself is huge for a lot of workloads, to the point the people eyeing an Ultra class SoC might actually be far more intrigued by the neural engine on a M4 Max.

Personally I have been awaiting an M3 Ultra just to get a quiet power house, since the M3 Max 16in I tested just got so loud under full load that I had to return it. But, those same workloads leverage the neural engine cores quite a bit, so if the Studio comes out and it's not rocking that M4 or something comparable, then here I am waiting again. Maybe I will just get the M4 Macbook and dock it in a drawer or something lol. I really hope they don't goof this. It made more since to me to do the Base M, then the Pro/Max, then the Ultra. But having the Ultra right next to the launch of the Pro/Max just feels like a bad move.

Agreed, Ultra chips need to come up first similar to releases done by the GPU companies Nvidia and AMD. Still Apple should better target and promote Ultra chips in order to make them more attractive.

Chomping at the bit for the new Mac Studio or Pro with M4 chip and Ray Tracing. Had to buy a custom PC, for my design software, that does ray trace renderings.

I think there is an alternative story here. What if the N3B node was not a compromise at all but rather part of a chip development cycle that allows the existing optimised designed to get performance improvements just by shrinking the die. That would mean Apples design strategy is: design, optimise, shrink. That way Apple get 3 years between chip redesigns and 2, years after an optimisation cycle to get ready with a brand new design as the next year’s improvement in performance largely come from the die shrink. Also by not spending all of the transistor budget in one design step they can spread the performance improvements out. I don’t think the fact the average improvement in performance between M series so far has been 15% is by good fortune. I think Apple has set a minimum improvement in performance that someone should see when upgrading their phone on a typical contract length of 24 months. This then obviously filters through the chip design.

They need to do something to differentiate the Mac Pro. I bet they simplify the line... M4 Ultra only in the Pro, M4 Max in the Studio, and then M4 Max, and M4 Pro as options in the MBP, finally, base M4 in iPads and Air.

Maybe this is the way forward, next-gen Apple Silicon is first introduced in the high-end pro machines (Mac Studio, Pac Pro), followed by MacBook Pro, and they ensure MacBook Air is mostly running previous gen Apple Silicon. This may prevent cannibalisation by MacBook Air to some extent.

Apple has to go to the (M4) because of the security problem in the M1-M3 chip designs. I am amazed that they are still selling those chips. Unbelievable. A guess Apple just likes being sued for negligence.

I think Apple might do a complete M4 release dump like you said at the end. M4, M4 Pro, M4Max, M4 Ultra, run through these chips, trying to get people who bought into the M1 generation to upgrade to M4... THEN release M5 a year after with Thunderbolt 5 support. The M5 will be on the next die. Personally, I won't upgrade again until Thunderbolt 5 comes out on the M series.

Going to a new node in no way requires completely redesigning a CPU, as that's not remotely how that works.

Yes, there may be ways going to a new node may enable better energy efficiency and computational throughput without any redesign at all: a CPU design is described via a design language that describes the logic and how it works, and that's translated into whatever the design node needs to implement such a chip. In other words: in all the aspects that matter, you design a CPU once regardless of whatever nodes it is produced on, and it works logically the same.

Apple would do better to have the ability to run an external GPU, or have a high performance GPU ability internal. Right now, not having the ability to run multiple monitors sucks. I'd like to have the ability to three monitors without going virtual.
