Cats Try Catnip For The First Time

I found with our cats that if you squeeze and rub the catnip between your fingers first it seems release more of the smell that they love. My cat will walk past a bowl of catnip, but if I squeeze it when they are nearby they go mad for it..

My two cats love catnip. I get them catnip pillows and have given many to friends and family for their cats. I was recently "fired" as a foster from a shelter due in part to my giving catnip pillows to a few depressed senior cats who loved the pillows were enjoying them. Evidently that was a no no. They also did not like my suggestions from Bark and Whiskers and Jackson Galaxy. Also my suggestion to scoop poops first before feeding cats their meals. I feel sorry for the poor cats at CHS.

I had 2 male brothers who loved catnip..rolled in it and ran and played until they fell asleep. After my Boyz passed over the rainbow bridge, I was given a young female, who had no reaction to it. She sniffed it and walked away. I did buy her play mice and fishes which had catnip inside them, and she played with them frequently. (She was a great fisherkitty!!) but no taste for the actual catnip!

I have a friend who can't offer catnip to his cats... Because he reacts catnip the same way that cats do. Apparently he has the 'catnip gene.'

We would give our cat catnip every year, Christmas and as soon as we put up the tree, she would just be going mad. Ma'am, like when am I getting my cat named?

My kitties had two years’ difference in age. My first cat did react to catnip; he would become immediately a crazy dude. To my second cat, catnip had no effect on her at all. She never experienced that high feeling. Nowadays, I know that if you want your cat to experience a bit of that fun moment, even cats that don't react to catnip can react similarly to silver vine. Honeysuckle, and valerian are also other two alternatives, but silver vine is usually preferred. I didn't know back then so she never got to try it because I would love to see her reaction to it.😊

Pique not peek. All three of my cats love the stuff. I keep cloth toy mice in a jar of nip. They grab them, fall over and kick them.

When I used to give my kitty catnip I always imagined his reaction something like:
"I love you, I hate you, I love you, I hate you!"

A lot of cats have no interest in catnip until they are about 1 year old. I confirmed that with the cats I now have. Only 1 of the four (2 boy and 2 girls from the same litter) had any interest in it when he was about 9 months old and the others started to get interested when they were around 11 1/2 months old. Now they all love it. btw, I grow my own so they can have fresh or dried catnip as they please.

My cat will ‘catnip roll’ herself to sleep. I put it in a little mesh satchel to avoid the cleanup. Unless I introducing new bedding or cat tree.

Cats usually develop a taste for either catnip or valerian by the time they're one year old. It is said to have a pheromone-like smell to them which would be why kittens have little to no reaction to it. If catnip doesn't work on your adult cat, try valerian. There are very few cats who don't like either.

My first cat went bonkers over catnip. He did rolled around in it. The 2nd cat didn’t care for it. Cats could be so different with catnip.

I don't have cats, but the raccoons that come around at night to feast on left over dog food love it. It seemed to relax them and they just rolled around on the ground and had a few lame wrestling matches with each other.

Yes my cars love it. When their done rolling in it and eating some they lay on their sides and kick their cute little back paws light their fighting something. So funny

We had a mixed tabby shopcat many years ago, she was quite the psycho. Catnip would increase her psychotic tendencies (think angry drunk), but green olives, for whatever reason, would have more of a normal "catnip" effect on her.

This schizophrenic woman got upset when I gave this cat some catnip. She claimed it made him vibrate, which it probably did. What she was seeing was accurate, but the effect it had on the cat and why he was vibrating were inaccurate. She interpreted it as harming him when it was doing the opposite.

My cat used to eat it up and take a nap.

We had catnip growing in our garden, our cats would lie in it, chew some, go "gaga" with their mouths open. Later they would go to sleep in the plant. When they woke up they seemed very tired.

I thought cats were supposed to eat catnip, not roll in it.

My vet said it's good for my cat to eat some catnip. My other cat does not react to it.

I planted some catnip outside that comes back every year on it own and my cats absolutely love it. They’ll climb in it and roll all through it and chew on the leaves and stems
