Just frame your window sill level and you never have to shim again.

Windows in the USA are a joke compared to the windows we have in Sweden. Thin and light with poor insulation value. Windows in Sweden have an inner frame of wood coated with aluminum on the outside and three layers of glass and you have to be two to lift these as they are heavy.

here in Michigan we use Spray foam insulation around windows and doors seems like a better option than the big stretch better R value.

I see you framed out the window frame with Zip. Would you do the same if it was Zip-R9?

As far as insulating the gaps around the windows, the backer rod, being foam, provides some insulation itself.
