Episode 49 - The usefulness of capability-maps
A capability-map (or, as we termed it, a Functional Business Model) is one of the most powerful and versatile tools for enterprise-architecture and beyond. It's also one that almost instantly creates engagement in architecture across the whole organisation: on a single page, we can see and present a wide range of key information about what the organisation is and does, and how it connects all of its activities into a unified whole. This episode provides a brief yet practical overview on why and how to create a capability-map for your organisation.
Yet the capability-map can also act as the base for all manner of other important cross-maps to guide the overall architecture and transformation for an organisation. In this episode we touch on two of the more immediate cross-maps: the Business Systems Model and Information System Model. In the next episode, we'll explore even more cross-maps that can provide huge assistance to communication, costing, project-management and more. A capability map give us all of this, in a form that is easy to see, and easy to use.
