I wonder if you could use the clockwork radio principle to power a probe that won’t be needed to be activated for decades, or possibly even longer.

Like a probe sent to Alpha Centauri perhaps, with Solar Radiometers on the probe to both activate the probe as it nears the Solar system its aimed towards, and recharge the clockwork mechanism like a giant self rewinding watch that never stops running.

The electronics would have to be powered like a clockwork radio, negating the need for batteries or Nuclear power, which will degrade over extremely long periods. This is the issue with the voyager probes as they age, despite the fact that the electronics and computers within the probe are functioning perfectly after nearly half a century of constant use.

The probe would have to be large and capable of making independent decisions, which may require a large amount of older hardier computer chips.

You could even go a step further, and have small landers on the larger probe that could be fired and directed towards other planets. They could be hardy probes, with a self contained non rechargeable clockwork power source of their own. Preferably a hardy probe to gather planetary data quickly, similar to the Venetian and Titan probes of the past.

The only issue would be having a secondary rechargeable clockwork mechanism to power the transmitter, which would have to be very powerful for the extremely long distances to earth. Storage of information until broadcast would be vital.

If Spacex can reduce the cost of launches further, perhaps we could have a mother ship probe that could launch smaller satellites like a Clockwork Cassinis, to examine planetary systems and their moons, as well as launch the aforementioned smaller probes

To everyone crying and whining about it showing more Earth than the CGI planets, it's a documentary not a science fiction movie, watch Avatar if you want that. And for the little CGI we get, it looks amazing, I love the quality over quantity. Just deal with it.

Sorry I just couldn't get into the show. They keep switching from the CGI world back to our world to show real world examples of trait or behaviour or animal feature and it's just very jarring, they need to stay in the CGI world more like the discovery one that was made years ago.

I really love this show, the CGI scenes are amazing and the motion of all of the creatures are so well done. The concepts behind the creatures had me almost screaming with excitement (thanks, autism) and I loved their relationships such as the skygrazers and balloon predators. My favourite planet is between Atlas and Janus. For Atlas, I loved the variety in the species, with complex creatures such as the balloon predators that have unique mechanisms. For Janus, I loved the concept of a tidally locked planet and how it forced the pentapods to evolve polyphenism. A project like this would have taken so long to polish and make sure that it was scientifically feasible.

However, there were very few CGI scenes and most of them were repeated throughout each episode. This show would have been a hundred times better if it was an even split of CGI and real-world examples, maybe even more CGI. The comparisons were nice but it felt like they took up way too much time, it would have been nice to see the same in-depth analysis of the fictional creatures as the real world ones.

There were only 3 or 4 species per planet and that failed to capture the ecosystems, there wasn't enough diversity to convey a complete ecosystem and there wasn't a focus on any plant. I would have loved to see something like a carnivorous plant or other life form "between the lines."
