Are Shiba Inus Good Pets? 10 Pros and Cons of Owning a Shiba

I think a Shiba would be perfect for me......aside from the price.

Difficult to train
Must have a fenced yard
Not good in a family with small children
Very independent
Otherwise, an awesome pet!🐾

What bothers me are the people who aren't good pet owners, and go out and get a shiba or any animal really that they aren't prepared to b responsible for. We see a lot of "viral" accounts who basically use their dogs as a marketing strategy if they get popular off one video, and when watching their content at all it's apparent they don't train their dog at all, they spoil it worse than a child, over feed it, don't exercise it, the list goes on. One of my least favorite things to see

Are shibas good pets? No. They are very stubborn and choose to do what they want and they scream for all the neighbors to think you're abusing them cause you need to clip their nails or brush their teeth. They also hate kids (usually).

We have a 1 year old Shiba. Ours chirps like a bird (really high pitch) when she gets excited, especially when on boats. Has any of you Shiba owners heard your dog do that too?

All dogs and cats can be 'good pets' if their owners handle them with love and understanding from puppy days and train them from the start.
I believe with love, care and patience all domestic animals can be trained and moulded.
Dobermans & German shepherds were used as killer dogs to guard the concentrarion camps.
Well, my mother's GS and 2 huge Dobermans were like gentle lambs because we raised them that way.
It all depends on the owner to raise their pets well, give them them security And a at able environment and be calm and sensitive to their needs.
And if they are witness to domestic violence and shouting they are likely to end up aggressive or very frightened.
The ssme applies today raising kids...

My brothers Shiba Kumo has never screamed (thank god), but he does whine when he really wants attention. Also thunderstorms, Kumo hates bad weather.

My Shiba is 15 years old and one of the best things about him is in all those years he has never tried to steal food off the kitchen table or go into the garbage bin. My brother has had beagles all his life and none of them could be trusted anywhere near the kitchen table. His beagles are definitely more affectionate though.

to be honest him being Aloof doesnt seem like that big of a con for me, i spend a lot of time in my laptop wich means im unavailable to give affection 24/7 so a dog that can put up with me being busy most of the time works well for me

From my experience they have a strong prey drive, hard to train, escape artists when given the opportunity, keep them on leash, sleep a lot, sheds like crazy.

I love my Kai but yes he can be a handsome and stubborn as hell especially when he hasn't been outside
But he's the most gentle soul and I wouldn't want him any other way

We have a Singapore Special that we 100% suspect having some Shiba DNA. Aloof, self grooming, hunting, not easily excited, walks with poise, aggressing on other dogs, puts face on human laps… this video is so spot on about the whole set of behaviors

We rescued a shiba chi, (shiba x chihuahua) and she’s so so loyal, loving and fierce! She’s a little cutie and I love her so much.

I have three Shibas, the two in my thumbnail and a red and white that I adopted from the shelter. My girls that are in the thumbnail are older and pretty calm now, especially my Sesame, who use to love to play “keep away from the hooman,” now she is by me all the time. The new Shiba is super sweet and loves to play, his big thing is that he is a night owl. It can be 3 or 4 in the morning and he is in the backyard screaming at something, most likely a bunny as we have thousands here. Shibas don’t bark, they scream so be warned. But they are so loyal.

absolutely beautiful dogs,love them! Unfortunately the hair is just too much for me.

Most of the cons is literally due to bad or no training.
The fact that they are high energy means they have high drive which means they might be more suseptable to be trained with playtime as a reward rather than food

My shiba is a great dog but WOW is she aggressive. We were puppysitting one of our friend's dogs one time and she grabbed the puppy by the neck and started shaking it around like a damn chew toy. Thank God someone was close to her when she was doing that.
She could only do it for like half a second before one of my parents (still not sure who exactly did it) grabbed her and hit her for doing that. I'm sure not all shibas are like that but she was incredibly aggressive and territorial to a puppy!
Thankfully she hasn't even tried doing that again after the whoopin' she got but still. No maternal instinct in the slightest.

As a Shiba Inu owner, I'm having hard times and good times. He's a big 7 YO boy and with time, he's getting more stubborn and aggressive with other males. He's hardly playing nicely with other dogs. Meeting two dogs at the same time is impossible. I don't really know at which moment it went wrong, but we try very very hard for him to have the best life. And tried to correct his behaviour, but something is just wrong. He's very sweet with us, but it's hell at some times when you go on walks. If you hesitate to take a Shiba, please don't and reconsider. Especially a male.
