A phototransistor detector is optically connected to an infrared emitting diode in each of the EL817 Phototransistor Photocoupler series' devices. They come in wide-lead spacing and SMD options, and they are packed in a 4-pin DIP container.

Devices of the EL817 series are photo transistor-based photo couplers. A photocoupler, also known as an optical isolator or an opto-isolator, is a device that uses light to transmit electrical signals between two isolated circuits. High voltages are kept from harming the signal-receiving system using opto-isolators. Opto-isolators that are readily accessible in the marketplace can tolerate input-to-output voltages of up to 10 kV and voltage transients movingAn LED and a phototransistor are combined into one package to create this typical form of opto-isolator. Although certain systems permit usage with analogue (proportional) signals, opto-isolators are mostly utilised for transmission of digital (on/off) signals.

An opto-isolator uses a light beam that is modified by input current to link the input and output sides. Utilisable input signal is converted into light, which is then sent over the dielectric channel, captured on the output side, and converted back into an electric signal.
