This isn't even the best of Die Walkuere. The First scene with Sieglinde and Siegmund is superior to much else in opera. Brunnhilde's scene with Siegmund

I add my astonished praise to the chorus of rightful admirers of the power and accuracy of these sopranos, singing over a full late romantic orchestra. Dear Richard would have been licking his lips at the results.

Of course, what this production misses, because we are still in Puritan America, even though it is New York, is the outrageously erotic psycho-dynamics that Wagner clearly intended his audience to grasp.

The Valkyrie are tasked by Wotan, who is their father, with reviving the bodies of heroes killed in battle, by fucking them back to life. The heroes are then carried aloft on "galloping steeds" (clearly the Valkyrie want to enjoy the horse-ride after than man-ride) to Valhalla, to join a supposedly invincible army defending the gods and goddesses from all and every possible attack upon their new Citadel in the Heavens. One reason the goddesses and gods correctly and guiltily fear that attack, is that Valhalla was wrought by swindling the Giants Fafnir and Fasolt.

Wagner had such a high opinion of bourgeois capitalist morality in mid-nineteenth century Europe!

All in all, an outrageous and emotionally thrillingly, and utterly outre concept, typical of Wagner's no-holds-barred politics and psychology, in his-her superior creative moments. A more piquant illustration of the Freudian Elektra Complex "avant la lettre", and of the folly of trying to defend ones ego-mania against inevitable moral and political dismantling, one could hardly wish for. The fact that Wotan also wishes all his daughters to love him, and be his lovers, in place of his wife, especially in the case of his prize daughter Brunhild, whom he loves more than anything in all the universe, is just the icing on the cake.

A game of Happy Families that everyone can play, or at least watch on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, and Bayreuth.

Did see the complet Der Ring between 2010 to 2012. It was one of the best opera I've seen and this scen is one of the greatest for me.

Should made with real white horses, with black dressed valkyries. blood spiring around in sunset dusk.

It's an odd choice to take this song about bombing the Viet Cong and depict it with a bunch of Viking ladies, but it kinda works.

The Ride of the Valkyries is the descriptive orchestral prelude which sets the scene for Act III. The scene takes place on a mountain top: the music describes the arrival of a group of female warriors riding on horseback – these are the Valkyries who carry the bodies of fallen heroes to Valhalla, the home of the Gods.
