Is it possible to upgrade the RAM on an original Raspberry Pi? It would be a bit tricky since the RAM is soldered to the top of the processor

Very interesting. I have one second hand Pi 4 2GB and one which is not working. I assume power regulator was dead because there is no “signs” of life. So I try to replace MXL7704 first then if ok, upgrade both boards to 8Gb. Because of very expensive Pi nowadays it worth any way. And also good practice to use soldering station. To my surprise I was not able to found on Ali any BGA practice kits, opposite to QFP which is a lot there. So this will be a real life practice and I hope will do this good and no need any reballing, especially because reball stencil is not cheap at all

the idea is very nice but i see several problems with it

the biggest one is not having the skills or equipment or the part, is finding a pi4 or the reason to try and do this, pi5 should be here already

would be sweet if you could swap that ram chip with a socket, so that you can swap the ram without soldering.

I see that you got a newer revision board. I have two older Pi 4s laying around, both being the first board revision with the USB-C flaw. Do you think an 8 GB upgrade could be done on those as well? I read that something was changed in the PCB design for the 8 GB models.

I love seeing microsoldering & BGA rework videos and I want to do that kind of work some day, I've already worked at a phone shop with the tools needed and got some practice by removing CPUs from phone/tablet boards (those Intel Atoms look pretty nice you know :P)
