I'm surprised so many of these lists ignores Feren OS which to me is the best Ubuntu based linux distro yet it never shows up on any of these lists.

I have used some of these but not all. I have not used Linux Lite or Bodhi linux. The rest I think I have used. Actually my computer came with linux mint pre installed. I Just got it a week ago from Think Pengiun, I have to say that is an awesome store for Linux computers. Anyway I didn't keep mint on it though I put Trom-jaro on it.

I've tried Linux Mint and I liked it well enough. My thing is that I want to be a able to customize from the start in modular fashion and I have been fooling around with pure Debian for a 2013 old desktop. Unfortunately, even Debian is a bit heavy for it. I have a 2016 laptop that the SSD bit the dust and after replacement of the SSD, I'm going to just move it to Linux.

Does anyone think Debian is good one to just start off with as long everything works from the start on the laptop? Even with Ubuntu based systems, I feel locked to their ecosystem and I want freedom.

I'm picking up another 1T B SSD for my rig and install Pop! OS on it. I'll use it mostly as my DD. I'll keep my Windows SSD for games that aren't playable, ex Warzone 2.0

Many years ago, I was using a distro called crunchbang. IT was debian based, very light weight and cool. Then they bust, now it is continuing as bunsenlabs ? I am not sure.
After that for a brief time, I used elementary. It was still in its infancy then, but still impressive.
After that I gave in to conformity and switched to MacOS. After all, as long as it runs emacs, the underlying OS is not that much a deal for me anymore.
But I still appreciate Open Source environments.

I think it is great to have distros that emulate mac and windows desktop environments. It makes changing to Linux much easier for those familiar with those desktops. If it weren't for Linux Mint, I wouldn't have switched from Windows so easily a month ago.

Too bad that any gnome distro that uses nautilus I haven't been able to get to work connecting to a samba password-less share, no matter what I try.. dolphin, pcmanfm, Nemo all work just like they should, but not nautilus.. when I asked questions on how to fix it I got attacked.

I have been using Linux for years now both Manjaro, Mint. In recent months however, First in Manjaro then in Mint v21 There has been a change in the kernel which has completely broken network connections to other machines, Linux, Windows and even my NAS. I was using hardwired mounts in the fstab file which worked very well. It stopped working a few months ago with Manjaro and now also in Mint 21. I have looked on many occasions for a solution to this and have seen a few different suggestions and none work. Samba has been broken for years and is not an option. So I have had to stay with Mint 20.3 as it works fine. It will be supported until 2025. So for anyone needing network connections to other shares, this is a problem. So, with all the reviews of Linux new distros no one is talking about the elephant in the room, broken network connections. To many users this problem makes Linux unuseable moving forward. Hopefully someone will figure out a reliable workaround and not 6 pages of edits to multiple config files. We need an app that allows you to find and auto mount your network shares that is easy for all users. I hate windows but... the networking works well.

Something about this distro doesn't feel right to me.

I like Zorin because of how it does software. It really lets absolute beginners get and run snaps, flatpaks, appimages, and gnome software store apps without them having to know the difference. Well, they would in the case of appimages know about them and download them, but they are ready to run on Zorin, unlike some distros where you have change the settings.

I find the pronunciation "guh nome" weird. In watching this video it seems to me that Linux really isn't bringing anything new. For me, when I used it years ago its strength was that the different distros looked so different, and I loved that, but what drove me and MANY others away was full hardware compatibility and OK alternatives to popular Windows software. And don't even get me started on dependency hell, something you RARELY have an issue with on Windows. I'm just feeling that Linux isn't really doing much to address those issues.

Zorin vs Mint...dual booted for a month with both, ended up taking Zorin off...issues with Bluetooth, and screen rotation on my laptop. Mint was just a bit more refined in general with better "depth", such as panel extensions and desklets that were up to date. Vanessa is excellent on the laptop, and using 19.3 on my desktop with NVidia. Tried Zorin cinnamon, after I realized I disliked gnome.

I was on various Linux distros for 6 years and have mostly returned to Windows. The issue was upgrading; the last time, Ubuntu Mate 20 to 22, broke the system. What good is an OS if you have to do a clean install every 2 years, and sometimes without warning? I still use Mint and Neon, but for unessential extras. For serious work tasks, Win 10 removes the fear.

I was so happy to finally be using ubuntu and then I had to buy a new computer. I never thought some computers wouldn't work well with ubuntu so I bought an HP. Sadly, after days of struggle trying to fix the audio issues, I am giving up and letting myself be raped by windows.
Where can we go for advice in hardware for ubuntu and where can we go to solve out ubuntu problems if forums aren't enough? I would gladly pay someone

Mint on my "Big Box," Bodhi on my Laptop! I do wish Bodhi got more attention - a little getting used to its quirks, but once you do, you can't ask for anything more versatile, stable and responsive!

I've used Linux since Linus first released the kernel and put it together with Gnu Linux back in the 1990s. My daily driver is Linux Mint on my multi-screen desktop and Manjaro on my old Lenovo laptop. I've tried almost all of the distros mentioned here but keep going back to Mint. I'm considering buying one of system 76 laptops if my Lenovo gives out.

Mint never disappoints me when I need something that works out of the box and easy to use, PopOs looks cool and I like their "alternative" approach. But in the end it seems to me that nowadays all the major distros are pretty solid

I definitely agree that Zorin OS, Linux Mint and Linux are among the top tier of Ubuntu-based distributions. I'm not sure about ElementaryOS though, there's just something about that nasty looking dock at the bottom of the screen that taints it for me, although I do appreciate the fact that they are making a serious effort at developing their own in-house programs for common functionality.

I honestly don't know what to think of Pop! OS though; they need a few more years to prove themselves in my eyes, especially since they announced their radical, major changes to their desktop environment in the form of a complete rewriting into a new desktop entirely. I just feel like the state of the distro, while admittedly as a relatively intact GNOME-based distro was never a positive to me to begin with, is currently even more in flux because of the major desktop environment changes away from GNOME they are planning.

It could end up being great, and hopefully it does! Unfortunately we don't know yet though. Here's hoping for a new desktop environment originally based on GNOME that manages to be better than its inspiration, in a similar way to Linux Mint's Cinnamon!
