This is 1 of the best explanation(which would never exist) about how CG software behave under sub-D. Simple and clear. Maybe the speaker know the fundamental of bezier, NURBS, etc.

your method actually is not ideal. " your hole " looked better because the first mesh had champher, which it is not ideal way for sub-D. "your hole " had the right way to add supporting loops around it. so no i disagree with your method.
