What's Your Least Favourite Programming Language? (2024 soundcheck question) - Computerphile

JavaScript (but not typescript — I don’t love TS but I also fully hate it) and PHP, in no particular order.
I’ve also started to dislike python but I wouldn’t quite say least favourite. It’s a mixture of the overly OO, overly dynamic (in the sense that you can monkey patch everything), heavy mutation-behind-your-back, and dynamic typing (type annotations are too much of an afterthought and don’t help enough).

I think that's a bit unfair. Javascript should've had far more votes!

It's POSIX shell. I wonder if it's even worth being called a programming language. Anything that might be even worse clearly isn't a programming language.

wow dissing PHP, then saying just use Python for webdevelopment? not defending PHP, but Python is way worse, unstable, and so easy to make mistakes in if you forgete to indent. At least PHP has protections against a lot of Pythons faults

Swift. A client at work had ipads and rather then make a system agnostic solution for them the entire app was made in swift. So now I have to work on a mac. I liked to think I was peaceful and above silly things like reddit pc/mac fights but every day I grow more and more hateful

I'm surprised BASIC wasn't mentioned. The consensus opinion of programmers over the decades seems to be that the worst language (that's not deliberately bad) is some unit vector in the vector space spanned by the basis {COBOL, BASIC, Javascript}.

If you're going for deliberately bad languages, then it's probably Malbolge hands down.

My least favorite is perl, followed closely by FORTH.

Web developer here using JS daily… I clearly know way too little about other programming languages because I have no idea why people would hate it XD

For me, it's easily Python. I don't even consider JavaScript as an answer to the question because we have TypeScript already so you can just use that instead.

Java is the worst by far

Back in 1970s, I thought C was worst since you don't have to be explicit with type with variable names like with the original basic, and lacked likeness of machine code like basic had (ie, no loops, just goto anf gosub). Kindergarten was wild.

Why did Python have to take all the blame for dynamic typing?

Why do people still think there is nothing else to use on the web besides javascript. For instance, Clojurescript compiles to javascript, can use all its libs. There are some very useful Clojure/Clojurescript projects that allows for live coding webpages.

The Lisp response is the typical bias based on no thinking. He has no grasp of Lisp, only sees syntax.

It has to be JavaScript. There are more cursed languages out there, but they're largely irrelevant today. JavaScript is everywhere - and it not only ruins programming but makes the software we use actively worse.

Or maybe it's Java since it convinced the vast majority of programmers that it's a good idea to take computers out of programming. Making the software we use actively worse.

Why all the hate for JavaScript? Just don't make mistakes and it's totally fine.

it is either JS or C++, and somehow C++ the static typed, compiled language with tons of implicit behaviours and misunderstood, verbose occult-like features with 'go f yourself' tooling is more pleasant to use than JS
