An absolutely stunning monument. Especially considering when it was built. I fear our misguided and indoctrinated youth will force us into renaming it.

It is apparent that we have our very own KNOW NOTHING party in 2023, people insistent on creating a country that excludes anyone disagreeing with them.

Washington Monument: slapped together with barely any money, literally just an obelisk
Historians: This monument represents the singularity of Washington's stature and blah blah blah

Those cattle were kept there during the Civil War, to feed the President, Congress, and the Judges of the Supreme Court. in case of a siege on the city by the South, or if there was a default on the Federal Government loans.

Years ago, I was able to take tour of the stones. You climbed many steps, but at each landing, the ranger gave a description and history of each group of stones. This made the climb a bit easier.

Amazing that the Washington monument history and stories it has in its walls reflects so well this country. It shows struggles, different ways of protest, of people complaining for economic, social or political reasons, for racial equality, for rights, for the different things that still to this day fills our political discussions… but it was built, like this nation, it was built on top of all those. Courage, leadership, and hard work… the essence of America. What a symbolism.

I remember at a young age being able to walk down the stairs in it, but because of vandalism of the markers inside on the landings, the NPS has stopped letting people walk down them, one of the markers was made of jade, and people were breaking off pieces of it.

The age of presidential monuments seems to be over, at least on this scale. No unanimity over choice, political infighting, endless controversies & objections from various groups, etc., would thwart any attempts. Beyond this reality, though, few ever are likely to measure up to Washington in our own time or the foreseeable future.
