This design is brilliant turning a problem the squirrels emptying the bird feeder into a solution of a problem the birds leaving pieces of seeds which can draw ants the squirrel cleans up after the ants brilliant absolutely brilliant
ОтветитьHey squirrels have got to eat to.
ОтветитьCan the same feeder be built out of PVC pipe instead of metal?
ОтветитьGreat idea! I like how it protects the birds while they are eating and the crows and hawks can't attack them. sorry about the pigeons and doves being too large.
? what do you do when it rains?
now all you need to add, is a second floor in there with a water bowl for them. and maybe a bird bath just on the roof, or at the end of the roof ramp so any rain water that comes down fills the bowl up
ОтветитьIf Mark Rober has taught me anything, it's that there's no such thing as squirrel proof.
This is a good attempt, though.
Won't keep out red squirrels or chipmunks I am thinking :) Cool tho
ОтветитьWhat about the small red/pine squirrels?
ОтветитьYou should sell them !
ОтветитьBurning the wood helps weatherize and bug proof it. For the bolts, I think I would use longer ones so I can loosen and lift up the feeder enough to slide the tray out to refill it. No lost nuts/bolts.
Tyfs❤
Bird feeders aren't my thing. I came to see the engineering aspect. Impressive, thanks for sharing
Ответитьbut big birds cant feed? only tiny birds
ОтветитьNow it's time to make bird proof squirrel feeder.
ОтветитьI feel like someone needs ot show this to Mark Rober..........
Ответитьn
anything, but this seems to be a great idea! We have more squirrels than birds and they are so darn destructive. I run out when I see them to try to get to the suet cake in a cage up the wash pole - they know me and run off as I step out the door As long as the ground is snow free I do not even put food out. We now get woodpecker, finches, juncos, sparrows and cardinals at the feeder, also saw an eastern bluebird; as long as the squirrels do not eat their food all is well. The same squirrels eat the best peaches off my tree - until I started wrapping them in tulle.
Best solution here is to get rid of all the annoying noise makers and feed the actual animals worth watching aka squirrels
ОтветитьLOVE THIS. SO WOULD MY BIRDS.
ОтветитьThe larger birds were unable to get in. Doves, Blue Jays and another I am unable to identify. Any ideas?
ОтветитьI use the same drafting brush in my shop too! Great little clean up tool. I’m making this project, ready for the spring hopefully.
ОтветитьI would intentionally fill up the skirts as well - so the squirrels too can easily use it, BUT cannot get to the center square and empty it for the birds.
ОтветитьTorture! Look at all this food you can't have and it's just riiiiiiiight there.
ОтветитьSo many squirrel proof bird feeders. Give us at least one bird proof squirrel feeder.
ОтветитьAnyone else feel sorry for the squirrel?
Ответитьthis is the best bird feeder I have ever seen; very good that you have also made sure that there are no sharp edges.
ОтветитьOh god, the squirrels are going to evolve long arms. They're going to be looking like Michael Phelps out there, diving for seeds. 😂
ОтветитьMy grandfather had a method for squirrel-proofing his bird feeders, it was a .22LR rifle. Eventually, the squirrels either learn to leave it alone, or, well, they leave it alone for other reasons.
Ответитьthat poor squirrel was having a tantalus moment there where his arm is just a bit too short.
ОтветитьThis is great for gray squirrels but I’m sure red squirrels and chipmunks can easily get in and out. My neighbors have raccoons occasionally raid their feeders and their arms would be long enough to reach in and get a nice handful of seeds
Ответитьand now they learn to use tools
ОтветитьI'd rather bird proof my squirrel feeder.
ОтветитьBest part about this amazing feeder: Not a single piece of plastic was used!! 👏🤘👍
ОтветитьNow we need a bird proof squirrel feeder 🙂
ОтветитьGood way of preventing larger animals from getting inside, but this will not last. Rain will creep between the board and the feeder vessel and remain there as moisture, eventually resulting in profound wood rot. Elevate the vessel using some plastic spacers to facilitate evaporation, and angle the whole thing so that liquid can't collect between. It will prolong the lifetime of contraption for many years.
ОтветитьIt's not squirrel proof, they just haven't figured out how to beat it yet.
ОтветитьThank you for sharing your designs. Great video editing, and it has an ASMR touch to it, too. Beautiful!
ОтветитьI don't begrudge the squirrels some of the birdseed. What I begrudge them is ALL of the birdseed because they take it all. Also, in my area we have a variety of very small squirrels as well as these normal sized fellows. The little ones could get into these holes (yes they are adults and not just young regular squirrels). We call them fairy diddles, and they are real animals, not the mythic ones of the same name. The really bad part about them is that unlike the normal squirrels these will also eat meat, and they will attack and kill small birds if they can catch them. On the rare occasions when they show up, I trap them and take them far, far away!
ОтветитьAs soon as the second person makes one, it's not unique.
ОтветитьAny chance a Chinese manufacturer has stolen this design and makes them for less than $20? 😁
ОтветитьGreat video
ОтветитьOh no he looked so sad after you made the dish smaller
ОтветитьThis is far simpler and more elegant than Mark Rober's attempt. Well done, sir!
ОтветитьAlternative idea: Use a seed mix with capsaicin added. Then the squirrels wont want to eat it. But the birds cant taste the spicy oils so they still eat it.
ОтветитьNo worries! Squirrels are hard headed little creatures. Something tells me they have tons of food "squirreled" away.
I have a question. Did the mourning dove and the raven (or crow) make it through the holes to eat?
I like the triangle one more honestly. I feel like it has better visibility and also it uses less parts. Great job on both designs though. Also instead of having to undo the bolts, maybe you could use a long neck funnel to refill it to make it a little easier
ОтветитьI would've made the roof hinged with a locking latch on it, so it doesn't have to be dismantled to refill it. A strong enough latch will still prevent unwanted entry.
ОтветитьWhat has been your experience with bird poo now that this has been up a while?
ОтветитьLove the idea, but in the uk, we feed a lot of blackbirds who are a little larger than tits and robins, so the holes need to be bigger that will unfortunately allow tree rats ( squirrel) in
ОтветитьGuessing 🐿️ chipmunks will get through 1 7/8
ОтветитьCan PVC be used? Thanks 👍
