If I use an 8” zipper and add the tab there is not enough room on a 9” piece of fabric for a proper seam. Shouldn’t it be 2” longer ?

I almost skipped this video, as I've watched many tutorials on zippered pouches, and I'm so glad that I decided to watch it anyway. So many helpful tips! Using the glue stick is simply brilliant. Moving the zipper tab out of the way makes so much sense. The way you did the topstitching, making the rectangle across the zipper rather than two separate edge-to-edge lines is another great tip. I've saved this to my "stitchy hings" playlist (yes, hings, I was amused by the typo when I made the playlist & never corrected it) and I'm sure I'll be referencing it the next time I make a pouch.
