So about timing my tasks, I never remember to keep up with it. I'll do it for maybe one or 2 tasks and then forget.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to set the timer to see how long it takes to do tasks. Invariably, I’ll set the timer, and then at lunch time I’ll discover that my timer is still running on the first task that I finished three hours ago.

I have my problems with planning a schedule, for the same reasons as you. I have several strategies: One appointment per day: That way I can make sure it happens on time. "Free floating" time management: In a week I have certain blocks of work time per day. I do what feels right in the moment to do in that block, given that the outcome is work related. Minimize pre/post time: Get your tools near the tasks, move your files from wherever to your project folder. And I have a different problem: Routines build up on their own, and I have my problem getting out of them.

I just planned my whole week and everything went according to plan. I even had free time. But today didn't. My partner scheduled our driver during the time that I needed our driver and now nothing is going according to plan. He was going to work half day to help me move the house and he isn't working half day. I have ADHD and right now I just want to get under my covers and scroll until the problem goes away but I still need to cook, iron and move the house without him... It's 4h30pm 😤

So, here's my problem with timing, cuz I've been told to do this before. I sit down to do an email. I start the timer, get into my email, start writing, get interuppted, deal with that, remember I said I'd get paper for the printer, go get that, come back and the phone is ringing so answer that, then get back to my computer and go "oh yeah! The email!" And boom.. timer is at like 40 minutes and email hasn't been completed yet :/ so now have to start the timer over again, and the cycle continues

I have always struggled with scheduling! My life is so chaotic, that if I "time block" I won't get anything done because new stuff comes in that I have to deal with... its awful. So, now I do a rough timeline schedule. I just put like 2 goals per day on the timeline, and only put them when the start time is. If I started it around that time, success!!

I feel like figuring out long things take you is great, unless you have a schedule like mine where 70 - 80% of my tasks for the week are new. What do you do when you have high task turnover?

I hate having to write down a schedule but it is basically what I do almost everyday to get things done (as a person with ADHD, dominant ADD) I tend to do things way earlier than planned when I know there is a deadline, because for every hour that passes, I get anxious and think I am not going to make it. Instead I miss out on other things; like going out for a walk or eating. I can only focus on one thing at a time, and when I really manage to focus, I hyperfocus. Otherwise hours of work is basically equal to 10 minutes of learning…I get distracted by noises and start to focus on the wrong subjects when reading/ doing essays. I focus on small things that have no importance being there in the first place. ❤️👏

The only time I wasn't late for work was when I showed up early because I forgot I was starting later that day. Luckily, I have some understanding supervisors. They understand I'm always even more late leaving work.

Not knowing how long something takes is exactly where I get into trouble every time. Also, I have a strong judgement about how long something SHOULD take me and I force myself to do it within that timeframe. I punish myself if I don’t live up to it (f.e. working late or not taking a break without counting the work hours). Needles to say this is why I feel horrible about my planning a lot and why I searched for this video to begin with.
From tomorrow I will start up-timing myself! Also, because I live alone, I don’t notice when I get distracted. I was thinking of filming myself during my mornings so I get a more realistic view of what I actually do.

My suggestion is: Set up to study 15 min on the first subject. If you find you can go on set the timer for another 15 min, then 10, then switch to the next topic and do the same. Figure out if it's better to get a passing grade in all or if you need to press yourself on a certain topic to make it through. Good luck!
