Alright. I certainly wasn't expecting watching a video about text-book squad formation in Xcom. But it IS interesting, and would try to use it

Isn't this kind of against the spirit of the game?
Once we get actual true leaning AI opponents in game it'll be so much better...

How do you set up the L shape after concealment is broken? You mention having your squad close together when exploring the map, but then in the context of combat, suddenly you've got your entire squad spread out in this perfect L shape? It'd take a full turn of dashes at least to get them in that position, potentially triggering more pods and leading to the aliens getting plenty of free attacks on you while you struggle to position yourself.

This is actually a nice and meaningful video, but I can't help but think that it could strongly benefit from gameplay examples in maps that arent set in stone, like the blacksite raid (which looks like the lions share of the footage)

There are two humongous practical problems with this.
1) If you don't know where the rest of the enemy pods are, pushing forward with half your troops to form the L risks activating another pod on that side, with only half your troops in range. And now the enemy is in an L-shape against you naturally.

2) If you don't manage to kill the stuff in the kill zone quickly, the enemy will withdraw backward to safety. That direction likely has more enemy pods.

Honestly, if you played UFO2Extraterrestrials you would not succeed even with four soldier in fight against the alien invaders there. No offence.

What happens when using this formation is enemy attacks only the edges of the L, and since you're usually a bit spread out in order to find suitable cover, the edges end up only having partial support from the nearest team member and no support from the bottom of the L. So in practice the enemy has divided you and weakened you all at once.

Don’t like it. I send two three ranger/reapers up the middle until I see a pack. Snipers drop them. Ranger/reapers clean up if they have to. Pretty funny when you drop a dude with your sniper and the enemy can’t see or get to where it came from.

How do you have an andrommodon(sp?) on your team?

Gonna give a similar strategy a try in Phoenix Point.

Biggest issue with this is if you don't kill, there's really not much you can do as a back up since your other units will be further away and may face line of sight issues. It's a good tactic nonetheless though.

REALLY interesting and I never thought of it. But it seems so good immediately. Reminded me a bit of Empire total war and line warfare.

I do wonder how well it can be implemented in Xcom 2 WOTC mainly due to the dreaded second pod reveal as an L penetrates deep in both of those sections.

But that's only something I'll learn by trying in game!

40 hours in. No idea what tactical map view is.

I accidentally did this today during a sabotage mission. The transmitter was located between two buildings southwest and northeast, and a small ravine to the southeast. I put my sniper on the roof of the southwest building and 3 three soldiers spread over the ravine before breaking concealment, and they absolutely wiped the floor with advent. I kept a soldier in reserve to destroy the small relays and buy me a few more turns for my sniper to clean up the area around the main objective and allow the last soldier to sneak in and plant the charges. I did take a few hits

Oh dang, I remember the L from a raidboss back in Cataclysm (I think). I will def be mindful of this for mation in my current campaign.

I make a W shape. With most tanky units (sparks or melee units) in the center of W.

That is literally the basic principle of real life room clearing which army and police force use.
And no, that isn't a joke, L-shape is the baseline for everything that happens after. It makes enemy vilnerable from all angles and avoide friendly-fire.
