It's important to know your way around a sash and case window if you're going to go about renovating one properly - and Jonathon certainly knows his stuff!
Before we integrated joinery, ironmongery, carpentry, full renovations and extensions into the business, Newtown was solely focussed on renovating the traditional sash & case windows found in Edinburgh. Lots of companies will simply replace the old wooden frames with plastic, but why do that? Wooden windows are far superior aesthetically and have often lasted 100 years - and we always aim to get another 100 years out of them! 💯
What are the main parts of a sash & case window, then?
🪟 Each window is made of a top and bottom sash.
🪟 Each sash has astragals, dividing the glass into 6, 4 or 2.
🪟 Parting beads run down the side, with draught-proofing strips attached to keep out the wind.
🪟 A brighton sits on top of the bottom sash, allowing you to lock the window in place.
🪟 Sash lifts go at the bottom of the bottom sash for sliding it up and down.
🪟 Simplex hinges are attached to the sides of the sashes, allowing you to swing the window in so that you can clean it or take it out.
🪟 Ropes run down the side of the sashes, with a clutch holding it in place and lead weights attached to make opening and closing the window smooth and easy.
As you can see, there's a lot involved with a sash & case window and it can take years to perfect the art of renovating these old-fashioned features of your home. That's why you should always go to an experienced and trusted company like us to make sure they are properly looked after and the restoration work is as good as possible!
