This video was timely and no doubt God brought it into my life at the perfect moment. I used to be a self-help junkie, New Age spirituality believer and in the last month have done a complete 180 and given my life over to Jesus... it's wild to see how deceived so much of the population is as all of the "influencers" continue to drone on and on about self-love, self-help, self-awareness... it's all completely narcissistic when you zoom out. Such a great thinker and I'm really excited to keep diving into C.S Lewis' work!

This is the quintessential message of most of the mainline religions. Submit. Kneel before some master whether real or myth. It brings another thought. A famous line that goes, "better to die on our feet, than live on our knees". Are we supposed to apologize for living our lives. Those who submit the will, lose control of living their own lives. The Freedom of Will is the antithesis of religion.

It's actually fascinating that this man believed so much in a book of fiction. It's like us going forward praying to Aslan.

He was born in Belfast.

Its in doing the things you don't want to do. Giving up the pleasures of this world. Sacrificing everything to help others with our time and energy and resources especially when it puts us last. Its when others become more important then ourself.

That's pretty wild. I was just telling my wife yesterday that our attention to the afterlife is actually not as important as compared to the furthering of Jesus kingdom. Once I realized this, I stopped worrying. I'm part of God's plan, that's more than enough in my book.

People help themselves without even hearing about Jesus nor ever knowing that such person never existed. This guy is a dorky hogwash. What an idiot.

In this day & age, If you have an internal problem you go get some therapy & take some Prozac. Although both can help you, nothing can help you more then demonic deliverance & loosing yourself to Christ. I have seen foundational issues with therapy and psychology, it really enhances humanistic behavior and selfishness because it treats you as the center of the universe.

Completely agree. We are broken as a people. We are the exiled sons and daughters of Eden, sinners all. You cannot be both the wound and the bandage. Only Jesus can set right what was lost in you.

Yeah this is struggle I dealt with. I couldn't imagine not being me, and yet in Christ, I could be truely and more than just me.

This is not wisdom from a man, but real wisdom that is imparted by the Holy Spirit. To say that he is wise because he knows things - because he has acquired knowledge or has unique perspectives is not giving credit where credit is due. He is wise because it is a gift from God. God gives gifts to us all - do you open your gifts? If you have an important decision to make...ask God for the gift of wisdom. Do not try to use your vast intellect and experience. Nothing is too big or too small for God. If you ask God and feel you did not receive a gift - then maybe the gift you are wanting is not what you need? Sometimes when God is silent - He is actually helping us. If you are asking for a child and do receive the gift of motherhood - this is God needing you for other roles. The gifts He give must also give Glory to Him. This is why in times of trouble we must have faith that God is good and is doing things for His glory. Do you have a problem with God wanting what gives Him glory? It sounds selfish. But is it? He gave His son to us to die for our sins - a painful torturous death so that we may be saved and spend eternity with God. Yes it definitely is about His glory. For we deserve death but are saved. God is glorious and I am just a sinner. Be even as a sinner and in life's storms I find refuge and security in knowing my God loves me and no matter what this world does to me, it is only temporary, for someday I will live in paradise with Jesus.

Lose the music…please.

That said, I don’t understand the title you have your video, “The Lie of Self-Help” — and how that relates to what CSL is teaching. I feel I know this material fairly well, having studied this section it a lot in MC. I wouldn’t say CSL is talking about “Self Help” at all — much less that he’s saying “Self Help is a lie.” I’d love to have you share your thoughts on the vid Title and how you see it being related to CSL’s teaching in this material.
