When the Milky Way galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy merge it is not going to destroy our sun or our solar system let alone earth. The only real change will be the night sky, as we know it now, will evolve in to a new night sky as out sun settles into a new region of the galaxy new fully merged galaxy. So saying all lifeforms in our galaxy would be destroyed is not an accurate statement because if humans, or anything earthly lifeforms, are still on earth when this happens, then they would be perfectly safe.

The only people to die in space were 3 cosmonauts of the Soyuz 11 in 1971 after a decompression in the capsule. However, the capsule was automated and the bodies were recovered on landing.
