Hi, with butt joints on an mdf casing, is it OK to screw the joint too? I read somewhere not to screw too close to the end of mdf..

IKEA is a good source of countersunk euro cabinet screws. Their help department has containers of spare things like dowels and screws which you can grab for free. Obviously don't take the piss and empty the container, but if you're in a store worth taking a dozen or so.

Hi. Did you do a review on threaded inserts? Been watching some of your videos again looking for it. Or if you have a link to decent steel ones as Screwfix etc only seem to have zinc ones which as you will know are rubbish and break easily especially trying to go in oak. Hope you can help. Keep up the great work

Very interesting video. I want to hang a pc under an mdf desk and I wonder what screws would be best. Is it longer and bigger diameter better or not? Desk seems to be 3.2cm thick, so would 4x25mm screw be enough maybe or would 4x30mm or 5x30mm would be better you think? Thanks!

I would like to hang a TV on an 18 mm mdf plate. Would this be a problem? It will be a flat mount, the TV will stick flat to the wall. What screw should I use?

I need to attach a 1-1.4 inch thick mdf table top to a metal work bench frame, but the heads of the screws need to be big enough (a little larger than a pencil) to not go through the hole in the metal frame of the workbench. NO one in the hardware stores seem to have ANY idea of how to do this. Can you offer me any guidance?

Very hand video taking all the trial and error out of finding the best screw to use ! . I’ve recently fitted some howdens units and doors at home and I found some of there hinge plates to have screws with a plastic plug on them , is that to give them a better fixing into there carcasses? . I have looked for them online but have been unsuccessful in finding them .

Any issue if you bolt through MDF? I assume you’d use washer on nut end to distribute force across the MDF face on the back end

What kind of screw would you suggest for a speaker that weighs est. 11.5lbs with an MDF backing to a ceiling mount? I'll likely be screwing at least 5-6 screws into each speaker and should I pre-drill the holes or just screw the screws in straight using a drill or do you suggest using a standard screw driver?

Different screws adds another variable. What are you testing? Screws or MDF? Not a very scientific test. I leaned very little from your video.

Are you pre-drilling the holes? I'm wondering what size hole I should drill, or if i should be driving a self-tapping screw straight in.

Totally agree on screws that come with hinges etc. Wish they wouldn't supply them to stop people using them .the heads strip off or snap off .There just total garbage !

Fun video! If you have an account at Häfele, take a look at their #013.30.900 Varianta Screw HC, which they actually created for use in lightweight panels, such as honeycomb. It does require that you predrill, but the hold is amazing in MDF. Scott

How consistent is MDF? Are your results reproducible? But, anyway, it suggests that we don't have to worry too much!

MDF has no natural grain so it doesn't have near the strength of actual wood. I watched a wood joint video where a deep joint held well over 270 kilos before the board itself split. I don't remember if it was even a hard wood or your average pine though. I'm pretty sure a simple glued butt joint actually held over 60 kilos in his test (although his testing method was different). Based on this test though your best screw didn't even perform twice as good as glue.

MDF seems like its begging to be properly jointed. Since its so soft it cuts like butter. From my first use of it I'm really not impressed with its screw holding strength. My first screw test without a pilot hole striped the MDF immediately and spun in the hole. With a pilot if definitely grabbed a lot better.

I'd rather do proper simple finger joints and glue.
