I can’t believe how many times u screeded the sand then whacked it,and then screeded it more times plus u kept standing on the screeded area continuously…wow.
We use crusherdust/cracker dust for the base (unless it’s a driveway then we use CTB cement treated roadbase or just mix cement dust with the base) but we screed the base to the height that the sand will be and then we compact the base twice which compacts down around 10mm and then screed 10mm of sand ONCE to the desired height.
We don’t use bloody conduit or pieces of wood to screed on or with, we use proper screed bars and metal strips that are 3mm thick by 50mm wide by 2mts long which we call tracks, we don’t have to put shovel loads of sand to fill the big gaps like u did.
Another thing u were laying the pavers the wrong way, every paver u had to fit in between 2 other pavers. You finally laid them the right way on the last 2 courses where u can easily put the paver up against the last one instead of trying to squeeze it into a gap.
There’s nothing wrong with the triangle bits and there is no waste either for u get 4 triangles out of one paver, cut 2 pavers side by side on the brick saw at the same time in half and then cut each half in half again from corner to corner and it will give u an exact triangle.
We overlay the pavers then mark a line to cut the herringbone pavers so the FULL paver sized soldierbond border pavers goes in (you don’t cut the border paver to make it fit).
We then sweep gapsand/paverbond sand from 20kg bags into the gaps then we compact the pavers with a piece of carpet under the compactor and then we sweep the same sand in again then we hose the pavers so the sand in between the pavers gets wet and dries to a rubber substance.
That is exactly how paving is done…I’ve been a Paver since 1988 and running my successful business for 20 years.
Hope this helps

Okay I would have liked to seen what he did to fill in the gaps in the bricks I'm assuming it was some kind of mortar ??

The border would look much better if the corners were mitered instead of square. Nice work, but pretty busy for such a small space.

I'm thinking this patio will fail in the next few years. There will likely be pooling, due to improper fill and compaction. You should only fill 3"-4" max depth at a time with your sub-base then compact and fill more. Those little walk behind compactors are not going to get good compaction on 5"-6" at a time... How ever over time hydro compaction will occur, due to the rain which leads to pooling... Freeze thaw line and saturation rate can have effect as well... Definitely take a minimum of 3 passes over the entire area whit the compactor, and it doesn't hurt to take an extra pass or two...

Also not sure you did anything to lock in you base where it ran underneath the deck, if so that edge might fail as well...

But good luck with it...

Looks great but.. only need about 1" of sand, you don't compact the sand either, screed sand, lay pavers, then compact paver into the sand after.

I'm not 2shore on what you are trying to do by going over an over the s screed an sliding th strips.up an down changing the level if i saw you doing that on my jobs you would loose half wagers an you would be shooting th crew lunches for the rest of th month for wasting time

it would be time consuming to do this but i would think trimming 45° 1/16" on all four edges of the top side. without running a jointer through a mortar joint those edges are sharp and could potentially cut feet if walking in them barefooted.
