That would've been the last moments of that guy had the GCAS not caught it.

~690knots under 10,000ft....fuck

Can someone explain why and who is screaming recover recover? Is that before or after the jet corrected the mistake? I thought it does it without anyone saying anything and the pilot is unconscious so who's screaming?

F-18 fleet was ordered to install Auto-GCAS in 2018 according to Defense Daily. This system has already saved the lives of F-16 pilots. The team that created it won the Collier Trophy.

Wow, pulled over 9gs in the recovery all the way down to 4000 ft. on the verge of supersonic. No question, he’s dead without the gcas.

I'm not a pilot, why were others shouting to pilot to recover? Hopes they'd regain consciousness?

Dang. That's terrifying. He's not even talking after a full... how many seconds. And the other member sounds scared, too. Wow I'm glad this exists...

So help me understand this. Break it down for a dummy. So there are obviously sensors measuring the attitude, alt, and speed of jet. Is this a terrain system that pulled up the jet up itself? Or has the pilot recovered?

That airframe is so stuff making the 9.1 Gs look like nothing, 4k feet to 13k in in mere seconds pushing 500+

FYI He went down in full afterburn. I see 692 knots as the max airspeed, having reached it during the recovery, which at that altitude is typically going to be above supersonic

Imagine that pilot waking up and realizing if he would’ve been training just a few years earlier, or didn’t have this system in his jet, he’d be in a fiery wreck in the ground

Needs to be in EVERY military jet period. It continues to save lives on a yearly basis and for those bean counters out there. What’s more cost effective? A 50k recovery program or a brand new plane.

every time I revisit this video, my heart ends up in my mouth seeing that altimeter drop like a sack of potatoes (with a rocket pushing it into the ground)... and the voice of the ATC (or whatever you call them in this military training scenario), screaming at him to try and wake him up. Oh boy, this is just frightening... Phew! Glad he was training at 17,000 ft. and not at 12,000... Man that was a nail biter.
