Honestly, my favorite theory is that xenomorpths were created, or at least bred, by some sort of alien civilization. They bred them to use egg-morphing, by which xenomorph species grew. However xenomorphs encounter a hive species and given their fast and very adaptive evolution, they take the hive trait as their own, forming a queen to lay the eggs. With that, eggmorphing becomes a secondary way to breed as it takes longer and is less efficient. Queen can lay an egg every few minutes.
This boosts their numbers and effectiveness to a point of overwhelming their masters.

I always thought that the pred-alien was slowly mutating in a pretorian first, then in a queen.
It's a thing in some alien videogames than in a complete absence if a queen, a normal alien slowly purificate its DNA until it became a pure ancestral form.
So i also think than a pred-alien would reamin in hos normal form if a queen already exists.

It's interesting that despite the xenomorphs being at the very top of Life's food chain it's also believable that humans were used by the Engineers or whoever because we are the only ones who could eradicate the xenomorph presence from the galaxy. It's all just someone's imagination but I love that people are so imaginative.
