What an amazing soul Steve was. Major influence on how I view the natural world and animals. When he died, it was one of those moments I can remember where I was, and it hit me hard. What an absolute bloody legend, he took life 100%. You could tell Conan loved his attitude.

A lot of people laughed and said "I told you he was gonna die" when Steve Irwin died, but at least he died doing what he loved. Most people grow old and cynical doing a job they absolutely hate for decades while taking antidepressants, anxiety meds, and trying to drown their sorrows out with cheap entertainment and unhealthy food. Steve Irwin lived his life the right way, which is why he will still be remembered 50 years from now, and most of us will be long forgotten.

Never understood the hype about Irvin. Sure, he's a sympathetic and passionate guy, but I think he's ways around animals are quite questionable.
I grew up watching documentary hosts like Heinz Sielmann and David Attenborough, who calmly spoke and quietly moved around wildlife. They backed off at the right time to not disturb animals in their habitat.
Then in the late 90ties this screaming, flailing, fast talking Australian guy came up, rushing at animals, grabbing them from their burrows and the like. "OH LOOK HAHAHA HE BIT ME!" I was honestly flabbergasted, seeing that for the first time.

That Irvin got killed by an animal is tragic for sure, but not at all surprising, the way he hectically grabbed, screamed, and waved his arms around animals. If a kid behaves like that near animals, you tend to advise it to act differently. Well it's no wonder he's so popular in the US. He matches the culture.

Steve was a one of a kind human being...truly universally loved by all for his personality and passion. He's been an inspiration to me ever since I was a little kid and it's thanks to him that I now own reptiles and have such an avid passion for wildlife and conservation. R.I.P. to a truly amazing soul and I am so happy the way his family has carried on his legacy and passion. I still wish I got to meet him before his passing. So much universal love for this man.
