I think this little box in my closet is a tankless water heater. Can I a pic and send it to someone it’s making a high-pitched noise and my water is cold. This all began after the plumber had to come and figure out why the water in the bathtub would not stop running and it ran for two days! After that, no return of hot water.

We were going to get a tankless water heater for the house we just bought, it had an aging water heater with an antiquated Apollo heating system. The plumber told us in addition to the new water heater, we would need the propane company to come install a new high flow regulator and an electrician would be required to put an outlet in as well. We decided to scrap that plan and a new tank is getting installed in January. It’s not a very big house at all so tankless just wasn’t worth the extra cost/hassle.

Scott, if you buy a tankless heater that has, typically, 2-D size batteries for the spark. Some tankless are equiped with a mini-generator, run by water flow, to make electricity and give you the spark for ignition. So, the gas tankless will operate when the electric is down.

You don't run out of hot water with a traditional tank. If you do, it means you sized it incorrectly. It's not a fault of the technology. Calling this an advantage for tankless is completely misleading.

Tankless can save money
In the late 90's early 2k I installed a tankless in my home at the beginning of spring
Turning off the furnace and its pilot light
My gas bill was at least 50% less than the past spring and summer

It's also vital to centrally locate the tankless. My late mother's house has its tankless on one end of the house and the kitchen sink on the opposite end. This makes occasional point-of-use water, like washing dishes old school, constantly needing a wasteful running until it's hot again scenario. And no, "just get a dishwasher" is not an acceptable solution. Said house will be up for sale in a month or so. I expect that the next owner will switch batch to a tank. The old tank location resulted in tank failure (and a small flood) about every 6 years or so. Ugh.

My gas bill went down with the tankless! Fun fact 1 week after I descaled mine of which had no scale show up in the flush the heat exchanger went for a shit! Manufacturer tried to blame it on combustion drain not having a open tee on the drain line

Depending on the location of the heater, you may have to run a long separate 1” or larger gas line ($$$). If you’re used to a real strong flow at your shower, you will be disappointed. I think the only advantage for us is we can fill a deep jacuzzi tub without running out of water. Other than that, the negatives outweigh the positives.

A battery backup (UPS) Would make more sense than a generator. That thing doesn't use much power a $200-$300 UPS would run it for almost a Day without using any Gas or Propane and it would be instant no going out to start the Genny.

I reside in one of nyc borrows using city water , i had installed a bosh Tankless water heater 21 years ago never ever serviced it never had an issue with ,and the thing works as good as the first day installed , i even forget wee have one ,it have an externally controlled thermostat we usually have it set at 98 dgs. with everything running sink dish washer same time ,or you can be watering the garden to and not even noticing any deference in temp, or flow, i guess it have a lot to do with the water quality and the house piping and water pressure ,it uses natural gas and electric for exhaust fan, i also have one installed at the summer house that is running on propane gas and 2 D battery's using well water there, 6 years now and so far had no problem , replace the 2 D battery's every spring time is all i do with that one
In the last 2 years i have replaced both of my sons hot water tanks with tankless they ere happy with them so far too.and they do save Money they use some electricity and gas , most important they are ready for you r demand for hot water at any time , one thing try and install it as clause as possible to where use the most hot water , so you have less travel of hat water and also save on water, me it is under the bathroom in the basement , open the hot water and it's there in 15 seconds , i recommend tankless water heaters.

I wish that people were given instructions like this on LOTS of things regarding household necessities. No one ever told me that my tankless water heater (which I have come to HATE because I only get a few minutes of hot water before it gets cold and no hot water at all in the kitchen, which is far from the tank). Same thing with our septic system which no one informed us about when our house was build. That ended up with needing to do major repairs many years later $$$$$$! Thanks for the video. I'm wondering if a well makes a difference on having continuous hot water when the water coming out of the well is so very cold? I'm not sure that my unit has ever given continuous hot water and it takes some time even to get hot water, so I feel like I'm wasting water just to GET to the hot water. This was the case even when the unit was new. I would love to have some advice on what to do! Do I keep this one and get it serviced and hope for the best, or is there a better one to use in our situation with the well?

a. My gas water heater doesn't need electricity. I can take multiple hot showers without electricity.
b. Tankless only gives you X degrees over the temp of the water. I live in the land of cold and the water coming into the house can be in the low to mid 30's during winter. Even a (exceptional) 60 degree rise only gives you 90-ish degree water. That's below body temp.

I flushed my Rinnei after almost 2 years, nothing came out. But when I installed it I found the second elbow after the old tank water heater had gotten 1/3 blocked in the 14 years after the house was built. So maybe scale has little to do with the type of heater. I did save money as I tended to shower do laundry and dishes all in succession and didn't have to heat water for it to just sit the rest of the day. You can buy a timer and a solenoid shutoff valve for the hot water feed to the shower if you children don't adhere to an audible timer. It would require some electrical work. If you put the timer outside the bathroom door, they have to exit the bathroom to reset the timer.

I had to laugh. $200.00 for a plumber doing an hours work. West Coast Seattle area they won't spit at something for less then $800.00. Now with our greedy idiot Legislature bowing to Big Box and Union shops posting new laws that say Licensed Contractors can't sub contract or even look at plumbing or electrical they just sky rocketed the cost even more.

Flushing the heater will cost you about $300 in south florida. They also make a nice home for the lizards that live down here. They get up in the fan and cause a code which can’t just be reset. Plus the initial cost of purchase and installation of around $3000. I can’t imagine saving any money. Stick with a tank.

You forgot one that they don't tell you about: that at low flow they cause the lights in the house to flicker. I can only stop it by opening a second faucet. The computer does this to save on electricity at low flow.
