Fictional example is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: After Voldemort rises and Harry is transported back to school, Dumbledore has to help Harry through his most traumatic experience ever up until that point, communicate with the parents of the student who has just been slain, fail in an attempt to persuade the Minister of Magic (who is in denial) to make the right tactical moves, create a shaky truce between two of his own allies who are mortal enemies to each other, and address the entire school about the harrowing events.

Communication and decision-making under pressure, and the ability to be constructive and agile in gut-wrenching moments like these, are keys to be really successful in the business world regardless of your professional status. The fact that it's a soft skill can make it that much tougher to master. PBD, thank you for elucidating the importance of this soft skillset!

I would be emotionally shocked out of the world around me, and probably trying not to sob, I would tell the parents, "There is nothing I can do. There is nothing I can do." I would not leave them, and I would always be ready to receive them personally, and any request they made of me personally. They would always have a direct line of communication with me. We only live once, and everybody matters to me! My next in command can handle the grand opening; the crowd will not be disappointed. The parents of the child that was killed will never be the same again. This is not my advice, this is my choice.

I hear what you are saying. But I am a natural man, authentic, full of integrity, and very real. NOT plastic. I believe in keeping it real. I understand the need to cater to the situation, but I will not be plastic. I will not deceive or be an actor. I will remain authentic. I will choose my words carefully, but I will not pretend to be something that I am not. And people can perceive that- at least many can. YEs, Trump and all politicians fooled people for centuries. But I wised up a dozen years ago. I see through the bullshit and will not be partner with it. MOney is not my motivator. a trillion dollars can't make me a sell-out.

I wouldn’t ever use Bob Iger as an example of leadership - he is to blame for many a disaster in Disney Marvel and Lucas Film - he’s an elite moron that is self-absorbed and is lacking in empathy and true integrity. What he says and how he acts is not reflective of his true character. This skill of “switching easily” is often and casually used by psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists. I’m a huge fan & follower of yours but this is probably the only time you miss something. What you missed is that this is a tough skill if and only if you have empathy and integrity and actually care about the people and the world around you. If you have neither it’s easy to switch. I’ve been in business for 2 decades and been on both sides with dozens of clients and vendors. Bob Iger is not one of the greatest CEOs ever. I can go on for days but I’ll stop on this point.

This isn’t a skill that can easily be developed. It takes certain inherent attributes to be able to fulfill these duties in succession. Any good actor can successfully get through a day or two completing tasks as such, but will eventually mess up, and there are no second takes. The two most important attributes you’d need to fulfill a role like that are competence and heart. The competence to engage in constructive dialogue and the heart to truly care, and come across as genuine.

Acting skills? We are talking about acting skills! :-)

Nope, The one thing harder than entrepreneur, when people think of an entrepreneur generally speaking, is day trader. I know because that is what I do for a living it REALLY sucks ass when you keep blowing up accounts. I finally stopped blowing up accounts.
