weird, when I had this as a kid, I never had a problem beating her.

That race has a horrible, counter-intuitive design. The mine races were just "tap as fast as you can". So, you expect the next race to be the same but faster. But actually, you are NOT supposed to tap as fast as you can. At a certain point in the race, Mary will increase her speed based on how fast you were going up to that point. So if you were already tapping as fast as you could, it would be impossible to beat her. And there is NO hint either in the game or in the official strategy guide to suggest this is how it works. I did not find out until many years later on the internet.

I bought this in Y2K. I fancy myself a pretty good button masher and was able to get that jiggy after many attempts. However, I remember thinking how NOT FUN that was!

When I saw the name of this video I already knew what it would be even before seeing the thumbnail. Brought back years of suppressed rage. Even to this day whenever I have to press a button fast I remember her, and the rage helps me push it even faster. Have to set the oven to 400 degrees? I can make it beep inhumanly fast - thanks to Canary Mary. And I remember her every... single... time. She should have been left in the mines.

I just did her last race for the page, and then i saw this video.
I thought the races was really fun, and very charming showing the different camera angles.

I can't really say that the last 2 races where difficult, because i did them on the first try.. though i was suprised on how close she suddenly was at the end of the last race.

I'm currently playing on Pal, so i don't know if it's the framerate that was the factor.
Because i mashed through every race.

As annoying as the last Canary Mary race is, I honestly struggled more with the Saucer of Peril. I never beat that thing as a kid. Then again, I probably only beat the Canary races because I knew about the rubber banding lol

Hey, if you can mash buttons which was pretty common in a lot of N64 games, you'd have no problems. Also, you bring up rashes and burns from "mario party" games... Uh.. No, that doesn't happen in Banjo Tooie. The analog stick brings up the burning and rashes. not A and B buttons. You quite literally never have to use the analogstick in Banjo Tooie to give you're self a burn, rash, cut, or anything else the jagged ass joystick could bring on a N64 controller. Guess what I'm saying. Skill issue, sorry you suck at mashing buttons, and you're upright lying, probably because you're salty and can't mash 2 buttons good enough and suck at a hand full of games because of it, so you blame a totally different problem the N64 controller had that doesn't even apply to this case

I can brute-force Canary Mary, but it hurts like a bitch. At the very least, I'll often need to pause and rest my hand.

Yeah, Bitchbird kept me from getting all of those jiggies with that damn mouse race. And is it just me, or is she really a human woman in a canary costume?

This challenge is a blemish on Banjo-Tooie, which is otherwise an all-around excellent game. I use turbo every time I play this challenge and I don't even feel bad; if the game doesn't bother to play by any rules, why should I?

All you have to do is pause the game until you are refreshed, then unpause and mash. Repeat.

The trick was to stay behind her until you peaked the mountain by the wasps bullseye. As soon as you start descending start mashing and you should be good. Just did it first try after failing an entire day last night haha

Thanks to boost on FF8 I've never had issues with mashing and beat all four races in one go. Without that ability learnt at a young age I'd be fucked lol

U wanna know what REALLY almost ruined Banjo Tooie? 1st person manual targeting. Land, sea, or air, it's clunky, sloppy, snappy, and crummy.

I laugh at your lack of Mashing Prowess. Growing up with siblings and Mario Party is all the training it takes.

Don’t mash with your fingers. Use a pen and just shake your arm very rapidly. It works.

I completed the Cheato Page race with only using both of my hands. My arms hurt a lot after defeating her but I did it!
(I play on a physical Nintendo 64...so much luck to the ones who plays the XBLA version!)

Banjo Tooie was one of my favorite games as a kid. This was the only jiggy I never got. I simply accepted it was too impossibly hard. I might dig out the cartridge and try the spoon trick.

I played Banjo-Tooie on the Rare Replay collection on the Xbox One back in 2017, and I went in fully expecting Canary Mary to try my patience and waste my time. However, I think I was blessed by L.O.G. himself or something, because I never lost a single time. Again, on the Xbox. I thought maybe the 360 version was easier, but it's considered harder? To this day, I still question my luck regarding that Jiggy and Cheato Page, and the loading screen in N&B felt ironically hilarious.

I have never even seen cloud cucoo land. I really need to play through banjo tooie to completion.

As a kid I never understood why she was considered so difficult, even watching let's plays of it a couple years later. Nowadays, I definitely understand the struggle of getting this jiggy, never mind the cheato page. Lol

As a kid who could occasionally get my mom to play something like Mario Party with me, I learned how she'd always win in those A button mashing minigames. Her technique was more or less rubbing the A button with the side of her thumb while grasping it with her index finger. Looks kinda like the spoon method. When I was a teen, and went back to Tooie one day randomly, I went back and tried Canary Mary in Cloud Cuckooland and was surprisingly easily able to win.

I was able to beat the Glitter Gulch Mine races easily.

The Cloud Cuckooland ones are an absolute nightmare. My hand was in agony after I eventually beat her.

I got this game as a kid for my 11th birthday and got a strategy guide with it. The strategy guide states to put your index finger and thumb together and then smash the A button by rubbing your fingers across the button. Works best if the button is all sweaty. Your hand WILL get hot from the friction.

Let her be in 1st the whole race and then just before the finish line SPAM LIKE HAM

I mainly only like old games, but button mashing minigames are one of those retro video game things I'm glad gaming has moved past.

It's not about tapping as fast as possible. You tap steady rythym and vary your speed slightly. It's easy once you figure it out!

My friend said he had to use his Rock Band drumset (on the 360 version) in order to beat it.

At the start of these races I would pause the game, switch over to my Guitar Hero drum set, then start and drumroll the whole race. She didn't have a chance

Yeah it's all about figuring out the rubber banding. Which ain't easy for kids ! But honestly as long as you stay a bit behind until like 3/4 of the race then start mashing for real, you're golden.

Trying to do this on an emulator was one of the worst gaming experiences I've had, had to download something to actually beat it.

On top of all that, Canary Mary's design just creeps me out. It's like she's the result of some freak genetic experiment to fuse a human woman with a bird. I cannot fathom why Rare thought any of this was a good idea.

I never made it that far into Banjo Tooie. I just made it to the zomibed Jiggy king. But I can predict myself that it’ll be a pain in the Jinjo

You have to race her differently both times to win. For the first time, you just have to tap the button at a consistent pace once you are ahead of her. You cannot slow down. Pause if you have to. This will NOT work for the cheato race. The trick for the cheato page is press as slow as you can to stay behind her, then when coming down the downslope for the final stretch of the race for the purple island, you have to speed past her to win the race before she can rubber band. Welp, if anyone reads this, hope it helps. How I got the jiggies in one sitting

I actually had the strategy guide, and it's recommendation was putting the tip of your index finger and thumb together, and rubbing back and forth using the nails, a sort of proto spoon technique

My sister was button mashing like a monster and managed to get the last jiggy.

Was not aware this was an infamous challenge. Recently played through this game for the first time and beat all of the mashing things first try. I struggled more with the archaic FPS controls on the 64 controller!

How I did it was I paused the game when my button tapping fingers got tired! 😅

It's not that difficult to beat Canary Mary in Cloud Cuckooland. You don't necessarily have to hit the button with your finger from one hand, you can hit the button repeatedly with both thumbs to move faster.

I know a guy who can vibrate his nose and he used that to beat Canary 💀 Out of all the ways to beat her, I think that takes the cake

I beat canary mary after a couple tries. What stopped me dead in my tracks as a kid was the final boss in the mayan temple. I literally never beat it. I skipped it and kept playing until i couldnt get more jiggies with where i was at. Made it to quagmire, never finished 😫

It took me 20 YEARS to get that Jiggy and Cheato page.

whoever designed this jiggy should not be in game development and is a miracle they werent sued for damages
