Isadora Duncan was after something else.
Comparing her search to Ballet and its honorable history of development does no good; they are not even in the same territory nor does either mode even pretend to be.
Nearly 100 years after her death, we have only just begun to scratch the surface of what she might have been after.
Comparing her to the later Modern Dance is equally off the rails. So is calling her vocabulary limited. It is small in scale because that is what she was able to find within the self-imposed limits -- read: DISCIPLINE -- of her intuited philosophic stance. Therefore it is HONEST and as such ESSENTIAL. For Duncan, "Busy Is Not Necessarily Better" as is evidenced in her spare choreographic aesthetic. And concerns regarding a calcified legacy, after her passing from this Earth, were the furthest thing from her oft-visionary Mind,
Hers were the first small steps towards a movement form birthed from the dictates and agencies of the UNCONDITIONED Human Body and Mind as she personally perceived that truth. Given her post- Victorian Age moorings she quite outrageously asked that others might try and do the same. She actually meant that.
Isadora Duncan opened a door on a completely different view of the Dancing Body and its possibilities.
Through her Art she asked the Big Question: "Where did we come from? Where are we going? Who, indeed, are we NOW?"
Thank you for this exceptionally valuable post.

I don't see anything extraordinary about her dance. What is interesting is she was linked to Aliester Crowley, the satanist and all three of her children all died of mysterious causes. As did she herself. You have to wonder what price she had to pay for her fame and if it cost her her life at the end. RIP Isadora.

TO CREATE THE REVOLUTION OF CLASSICAL DANCE, ISADORA DUNCAN FELT THE CALL OF MODERN FEMININENESS INVENTED BY THE CAN-CAN DANCERS, WHICH I TALK ABOUT IN A VIDEO ON MY CHANNEL.

I’m afraid the picture in my minds eye created by the journalist that said Isadore was a loud mouthed narcissistic fool, that drunkenly rolled around on the floor like seal all night. I also suspect due these personality traits that her children and Nannie’s death was no accident with Isadore miraculously surviving strongly implies no random event.
She has all attention traits with none of the skills that obtain attention by tradgedy and by proxy so they suffer pets only.
That galavanting imbecile criticising the Bolshoi? Another trait that justifies her lack of discipline and hard work.
Sorry, I tried. Her affectations and selfishness eventually even killed her.
I’m sure some one will say don’t speak I’ll of the dead and then go and abuse the living to do so, but I’m afraid I have seen more than of Isadore Duncanites and I don’t like it.
I don’t hate it. But I certainly don’t like it.

She seems to really enjoy herself. That spirit must've faced a lot of resistance in the close-minded society of back then. Today spirits like hers are celebrated, albeit in some countries in the world.

She couldn't dance for shit. It's no wonder that she never let herself be filmed dancing (other than this instance where she didn't know it was being done). She was a stupid bohemian who revels in the lack of any structure, hence her big "reform" of dance, where it was just to clumsily bounce and twirl around with no form. She was a NO-TALENT. She was simply "avant garde". She is to dance what Andy Warhol was to "painting". And she was a stupid communist revolution supporter to boot.

In Isadora's day the ballet dancers wore corsets and painted toes on their tights to imitate bare legs. She danced as she was moved to, in joyful celebration of the body, and with the music that moved her spirit. Ever hear of Authentic Dance? And if you tragically lost your 2 beloved young children in a senseless accident, might you not also change your ideas of God and how we live on??

Si agitava... non sapeva ballare... mezza nuda coperta di due pezzi di chiffon per allora pareva chissa' che, giustamente, ma a quel tempo c'era Djagilev... che proponeva ben altre cose. Per me un mezzo bluff..

The devout atheist and close friend of Aleister Crowley has a dance choreographed about her children surrounded by angels and hopes to be reunited with them someday. People like to believe in fairy tales. One has to wonders if the last movements of her scarf were poetic justice.

So many delusional dancers still thinking “that the only way to dance, or to show ones technical / expressive ability in dance is to be done within the confines of the ballet traditions. And some clearly think being Anorexic, and lacking the confidence to dance except you mask yourself behind (technique and shallowness of “beauty” ) is what good dancing is about...... Sorry to disappoint you, especially the first person who commented on this, “you know nothing about dance”... keep living in your cheap euro-centric notion about ballet being the utmost expression of “dance-art”

Duncan was interesting in the sense that people either hated her or loved her. I think she was a person with tremendous talents and musicality yet incredibly close-minded so her "dance vocabulary" was not very broad. However, if she had pursued serious ballet training, maybe she wouldn't have been this sensational dancer of her time
