Navy sailor here. We use a lot of acronyms. That said, if you want an easy test to tell if a person is bullshitting you about being in the military in real life ask them what their service number is.
They should be able to tell you immediately no matter if they're drunk or high or whatever. We use that number so much even a raw recruit will be able to rhyme it off without a second thought.
