I am reading this book now (Tue 23-05-2023), and my take on the book is that people don’t have to be my enemies. For 35 years, I have been told that I must follow the codes of culture, especially on first dates and relationships. Being the gentleman in the eyes of culture and other people without a choice meant that I didn’t have value or authenticity, that I didn’t have ‘me’, that nobody loved ‘me’, but loved only what I was forced to contribute as a (gentle)man: money, status, prestige, etc. This, I inadvertently transferred to the workplace where I must be the most beyond excellent male employee, and how I relate with law. Everyone was above me since I had no voice. This says that I do have worth, my own worth, my own decided worth of my own choosing as I evolve through my life.

Adler obviously didn’t understand how the unconscious mind works. The conscious mind is just 10% of our entire consciousness & psychologists like Adler have no idea about the other 90%, which runs the show until we uncover our unconscious programming & conditioning. Do you think Pavolov’s dogs salivated because they wanted to? No- it was an involuntary reaction coming from their unconscious minds, from being conditioned. To say the past has no affect on our present & future is an oversimplification & rationalization of life. The left brain doesn’t think the right brain exists, lol. It’s just not reality. There are a few good points in this book but so much of it is naive & flawed, it’s honestly not useful in the real world. Adler was very idealistic and a very shallow thinker. Having the courage to be disliked is the best idea in this book. We can’t make anyone happy but ourselves, and that is the truth.

Also, I've read this book a number of times and I feel like worrth is more than insight or emotional support. Ones very existence is their worth. You being here, is worth more than all of the materialistic goods one could conjure. Yes, money, food, and shelter is nice, but you being here and just by you being alive is much more valuable than all of those resources combined.

Those who embrace being disliked are the ones who live the best lives. As a matter of fact, YOUR life satisfaction is in direct proportion to the number of people who dislike you.
