PS1 Beginners BUYING GUIDE & Best Games

This was a history lesson and not a buyers guide. I wanted to see which is the best version to buy in 2023. I'm worried about parts failing.

I just had four PlayStation consoles literally dumped on my doorstep along with six games. Two are old design and two are the smaller PlayStation. Games included RE 1,2 and 3. So my PlayStation collection just got a huge hardware boost.

My favorites from the console were God of War 1, Tomb Raider, Crash bandicoot, Crash Team Racing, NHL 2000. I really wish I played that Castlevania SotN, really looks awesome and seen a couple of speedruns on it, I still own my PS2, so maybe I should lookout for a copy of it to try it out myself :)

for new Collectors i can always recommend Crash Bandicoot 1 and Need for Speed 3 and 4 and Ridge Racer Type. Ryman 1 i also would recommend. Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Chross (doesn't exist on the PAL Version unfortunately)
Tekken 3 and Soulblade best Fighters on the PS1 on my opinion.
Crash team Racing is cool. tony Hawks Skateboarding/ Pro Skater and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2
People who like real Driving Simulator get Gran Turismo1 and 2
If you like music games get Parappa the Rappa and Um Jammer Lammy

I like Crash Bandicoot 1 more than the third part. Of cours ethe third Part is very good no question but too easy for me. I lik ethat Crash Bandicoot 1 is difficult. If you want to get 100% this is very sick because its so hard and sometimes anoying yes because you don't allow to die if you get the first Check Point. I have done this game 100% without cheating:)

I remember trading cars with my friend in Gran Turismo through memory cards. Such a cool feature back in the day.

King of fighters 99. I got it loose for 10 and it’s a fun game. It’s pretty scratched up being in the paper fold but when it plays, it plays. I just bought MGS1/playing for the first time to finish a metal gear collection, just missing 4 and 5 physical copies. Also, haven’t beaten 5.

I wish I had the money to buy it, one of my daughter's favorites. His birthday is near, a month away.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but there's a controller you didn't have here. It was the first one that had the twin analog sticks but with no force feedback. It also had longer handles. Not a very long lifespan for this one because it was only around for about a year before the dual shock was introduced.

Watching this in 2023 blows my mind! The psone (yep, thats the name), still looks new and clean to me. It's so bizarre the phone I'm watching this on can connect to an 80" 4k tv and bluetooth a controller, upscale the games and I can take everything with me on a whim... Still doesn't hold a candle to getting off school, nabbing my copy of resident evil or metal gear, riding my bike to my buddies house and showing them where I was in the game on their dads "massive" projection big-screen tv.

Extremely late to the comments here but a tip for anyone playing PS1 games on their PS2. While you do need a PS1 memory card to save games and load your saves during play, you can copy your PS1 save files over to the much larger PS2 memory card and store them there. Meaning you can basically use a PS2 memory card as a bank for your save files, and get away with only using a single PS1 memory card to load/play those save files. All you need to do is copy the files back and forth as needed. I have hundreds of save files for PS1 and I would need probably dozens of PS1 memory cards if I didn’t do this.

The biggest thing i missed from ps1 games on the ps2 was password save states so much help when i didnt have memory cards

I always thought the PS1 was useless after the PS2 came out because the PS2 console played all the PS1 games. Until I learned about the PS1 link cable allowing 2 PS1 console to be linked together to battle each other on separate TV’s. The PS2 can’t do this.

I just got FF7 FF8 and FF9 all complete in box for $40

I had the improvised PS One console which was the 1st one for me ever and I had some great games on it + a black original disc containing 50+ games, it was crazy and no matter how much I would get stuck on a game and shook the PS on the ground or stomp it with my feet, it would still run! Amasing!

PS1 looked sooooooo good and had a great design. What happened to the PS5 it’s the ugliest system ever released

i remember in t he early ps2 days i had let my friend borrow my memory card, he dident give it back when he was supposed to.
at the same time i had hired out ffX and got like 15 hours or so into the game, only to die to one of the bosses.

so pissed, never clocked ffx since.

As someone collecting in 2023 I had to laugh when you said the PS1 is cheap. I wish it still was! Although it is still one of the cheapest you can collect today.

How can you not have Hogs of War on the listen game was straight up gold

Outside of the Final Fantasy games I gotta say Chrono Cross and Legend of Dragoon were my favorite RPGs in the PS1 era

My brother and I played the heck out of Time Crisis in the arcade. So of course we had to get the PlayStation version. And that light gun was so much better than the Nintendo zapper.

PS1 had so many games. I mainly played and enjoyed RPG/JRPG but such a variety of fun games on PS1. The list is long!
