Was the Original God of War Trilogy as good as I remember? - A look at the games that shaped Kratos

GoW1 was good, but sequels did everything so much better.
Last third of GoW3 always felt shoehorned in, like a different writer joined and tried to mend the ending (I personally liked the ending, just not the how it was executed). GoW2 excells in pacing, and I disagree with your plot rating. My top GoW games have to be either GoW 2 or GoW 3.

though the new god of war is amazing in its own right, i will take the og gow over the new one anyday

The lava titan in gow 3 is named Perses, but Hyperion is seen at the beginning of the game when he gets beaned by Poseidon and turned into the horses

These older games were like you said trying to be the best combination of combat platforming and puzzles in the hack and slash genre at the time, ultimately just trying to be unadulterated stupid fun, the newer games are very derivative of modern lite rpg titles making them quite boring in comparison

I can NEVER get enough GoW content. I have essentially grown with Kratos (as an angry young adult I first discovered the original game, and have since grown along with Kratos as a father struggling with his past demons as he tries to raise his children). I replay the games every couple of years, including the PSP titles. Having replayed Ascension after Dad of Boy and Ragnarök made me realize that was quite a bridge game between the two styles of play found in the Greek era versus that if the Norse. I'd listen to whatever GoW content you released.

I'd have enjoyed the two new ones if you got to fight the way you wanted. Invulnerable enemies almost always just sucks the wind right out of my sails. The combat was fun at it's heart, but mostly invulnerable goons killed it for me big time.

Oddly enough my father was a big fan of the og resident evil. He also loved playing the hitman games and god of war on my ps2. Whenever i got home from school i would sit down and do my homework at the dining table just so i can watch him play it.

I love how Kratos kills like 5 other gods and a handful of titans on his quest in GOW3 to...acquire the power to kill a god. You beat Poseidon to death, steal Hades' soul, and rip Helios head straight off and then Hephaestus and Athena are like "Well in order to obtain the power required to kill a god you have to go get Pandora's box again" Idk seems to me that he was doing just fine without it and the only reason they sent Kratos on that journey was to stall for time

I was in 5th grade when the first gow came out. I was absolutely obsessed with the game and became obsessed with Greek mythology too

Have owned all of the God of War games on Console and handheld, the first one was Chains of Olympus. Only managed to complete Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, God of War 3 and God of War 2018. As someone who is older I am not keen on story driven narratives with lots of talking these days, so I prefer the old school style of God of wars over the newer ones. I played God of War 1 and 2 on PS3 after completing God of War so I don't have the same nolstagia for them (I now regret getting rid of m PS2 in the early 2000s in favour of the OG XBox, but I did love Fable when it arrived), I wished I had bought God of War 1 in 2005), for me this is my preference

1) God of War 3 (PS3 version) - I also have this on PS5. The Poseidon boss fight near the start is still epic in 2024 as it was when this game was released.
2) Chains of Olympus (For a while after I got married in 2006, my only source of gaming was the PSP), competed this several times. Was my first God of War experience and seeing this in handheld was mind blowing at the time.
3) Ghost of Sparta - Played this on holiday in Cyprus
4) God of War 2018
5) God of War 2
6) God of War - Would be higher on this list but I was done after the tower of spikes in the Hades level
7) God of War ascension - Love what I played of this, but bought this during the time I had gone from PS3 to Xbox One, will give this another go on PS5
8) Ragnarok - Really really really boring game.... zzzzzzzz (I need more action, less story and getting lost int the map) - Got this bundled with the PS5

Also other games in this genre I like

1) Dantes Inferno
2) Wolverine

And am a big fan off games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta too

Fun fact: Hercules in these games was voiced by Kevin Sorbo, who played Hercules in the 90's TV series of the same name (Well, "Hercules: the Legendary Journies")

Hephaestus needed Kratos to hold the weapons before he could hit him with the lightning. They were a conduit.

Incredible game for season has aged very well in recent years It would be amazing if there were others Gods In this third game like:


Hypnos,Demeter,Dionysus,Apollo,Artemis,Eros,Eris,Íris and Hestia with the grandchildrens of Zeus what could have been added to the game like:

Triton,Hecate,Asclepius,Orpheus,Macaria and Melinoe since they are Sons of Apollo,Hestia,Hades and Poseidon

another thing that also Ares,Aphrodite,Hephaestus & Athena they also have Childrens too


It's a shame that these Characters/Gods didn't appear in the game who knows in the future.. I believe there could still be two games of the Greek Mythology to close the saga


and in the current games of Norse Mythology what is now happening in this new saga and mythology there would be a lot to do with more two games a sixth game and the origin game with many story dlcs especially in the Ragnarok that I definitely believe surely there will be more


and a curiosity: we almost had a fight against Echidna the mother of all Demons and Creatures of the Greek mythology a shame it was cut and it would have been a fight on behind the Gaia's back in a forest certainly at the beginning of the game from this third game and we almost had the NPC Ixion as one of the puzzles in the underworld in the game that he would die in one of the traps that we would try to uncover to pass the level that was cut very sad that it didn't happen..


and all these things and Gods with yours Childrens/DemiGods was cut from the final version content and they were not added/placed in the game.. 🤔🥺🤧🙏🙏 like and Bye!

i recently played the god of war games cause i never played 1 or 2, but i played 3 countless times. And although I had frustrating moments while playing, I still really like the games, especially 3. I wish there were easier ways to play all of them on the same console. I know that 1 and 2 can be streamed through PS now or whatever, but having an actual official release would be nice too. It'd give people who were curious about god of war's story a chance to look into it any play it themselves if they started off with 2018s god of war.
