All that these brave Russians had fought for is being undone by Putin now and their rights have been chipping away little by little since he took control.

Bush’s view on coups was excellent. As head of the CIA for years, he truly was an expert on them…satire of life

From 50s through to the start of 90s USSR had been on the focus of the world. Even Americans seemed were keen of watching news about the Soviet Union. Now Russia does not have popularity, world superiority snd other advantages like its predecessor had.

Im worried something like this could happen in the US sooner rather then later. Albeit for "different" reasons. But this is a real concern. I was a pre-schooler when this happened, so i remember little, but what i do remember is my fathers concern. We moved back to Puerto Rico that year. Wa came bavk a year later. I remember in second grade that our globe and maps in school still had USSR still stamped in them. As an early millennial, i remeber much if the changes in my world.

The Soviet Union was a failure. Now we wait for the Communist Federal Republic were every citizen gets to vote on anything just like the Roman Empire. when the Soviets came to power Lenin said the beginning of the dictatorship of the proletariat he was lying decades of control of the workers and enslavement. Russia has always been a country of what if's.

It's too bad that Yeltsin and the corruption led to the selling off of the Russian economy for pennies to the oligarchs. Russia could have become a thriving democracy and ally. Now we have the Putin dictatorship and the invasion of Ukraine.

If only Boris kept a goos public image, if only Medyedev wasn't so greedy, if only Putin wasn't so malicious. Russia and their people's heroes that created the Russiam Federatiom would be just like an other somewhat "free" nation, maybe not entirely democratic, but at least free to lead themselves on the world's stage

My 21st-century brain is straining to figure out what kind of slant this coverage is trying to push.

It is inconceivable to me that a journalist is capable, or ever was capable of objectivity. Besides some meangless emotional rhetoric, I can't figure out what this broadcast is actually saying.

Yeltsin was applying the shock therapy recommended by well known Harvard professors and Russian liberal economists. Russian average living standard has just got to the level of 1990. The price of ‘freedom” and “democracy”. 30 years lost. Vietnam has the same government and improved its average living standards by 20 times, over the same 3 decades.

Capitalism and the United States WON the Cold War while the Soviet Union disintegrated under its own weight without a single shot being fired; Socialism is the obsolete ideology that failed miserably in Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Grenada, Vietnam, North Korea, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Libya, Sri Lanka, Chile, Hungary, Nicaragua, Poland, El Salvador, Mozambique, Romania, Honduras, Mongolia, Bolivia, Afghanistan, Angola, China (which has been Capitalist in everything but name since the economic reforms of 1964 by Deng Xiaoping), Russia (of course), and everywhere else it has been tried.
Capitalism continues to be the best and only option while Socialism continues to be the worst, the most failed and most lethal after having caused at least 120 million deaths in less than 90 years which would translate in more than 1 million deaths per year.
BTW, how come reds keep bitching about American "imperialism" but never mention Chinese imperialism in Vietnam or North Korea? Or Soviet imperialism in Afghanistan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, East Germany or Yugoslavia? Or Cuban imperialism in Angola, Mozambique, Grenada, Nicaragua or Venezuela? Or Yugoslav imperialism in Albania?

And let's finish with the Socialist prayer:
If it's a Socialist atrocity, it never happened
If it happened, it wasn't that bad
If it was that bad, they deserved it
If they didn't deserve it, mistakes might have been made
If mistakes were made, that wasn't real socialism.

Russia has always been a problem child for the West. It wasn't in Europe's best best interest for the United States and Britain to support the Soviet Union in it's fight against Germany in WW2, but they did it anyway. Now we see the end result of that, war in Ukraine and many countries in Africa and the Middle East destabilized by Russian intervention and mercenaries. To keep the Soviet Union alive was a colossal blunder.

I could just be naive, but it’s sad to see all that hard-work, blood and sacrifice those people made just to see another guy make Russia a pariah state again.

By all mean, for both east and west, the world today would be better if this never happen. Even if it's just Russia turn capitalist as a whole.
And yet, oligarchs divided the cake, over 75% Soviet people who voted for keeping the union lost their home forever, never knowing how deeply they're wrong even to this day.
