One of the biggest reasons to still use this phone in 2022 is the custom ROM support. Tons of developers chose to support this phone because of its unique set of features so if you want up-to-date Android features and security patches then you have way more options than basically any other 4+ year old Android smartphone.

Personally I use iodéOS, which is comparable to CalyxOS in its blend of privacy and functionality. With the Note 9 being one of the main devices iodé support, I will likely be using it for a couple of more years at least and hit the 5 year goal I set when I bought it.

The headphone jack was the worse thing they ever removed..........I do not like wireless earbuds.....makes no sense to me. I have wired headphones and i don't waste time having to charge them and the quality stays the same.......

Ugh, CANNOT AGREE MORE! Thank you for verbalizing my thoughts so clearly. I'm on my yearly search for a replacement for my Note 9, and there is still NOTHING out there that compares.

I would be happy to pay absolute TOP TOP TOP prices (as expensive as anything out there) to have headphone jack, stylus, expandable storage, back fingerprint sensor)..., but instead I'm going to probably buy my 2nd note 9 for $300 on Amazon, figure out how to custom ROM Android 13, and keep going.

I refuse to purchase a new phone for more money that has LESS of what I want. Maybe if enough of us do it, Samsung will listen and finally give us a flagship phone with the features we want. Or maybe some up and coming phone company will see this as a chance to come in and corner a neglected segment of the market! Ah to dream

I use the note 20 ultra atm and the note 9 was the phone I always wanted. I just so hellbent on getting latest updates to be honest. Also I would say this is the most complete Samsung phone ever. If the note 7 didn’t explode like it did I think it would have been the peak Samsung phone of all time

My S7 gave out on me so I needed a replacement. The Note 9 is the only phone I can actually tolerate right now that doesn't cost $1000, so I overpaid for one that's hopefully new.

Sony seems to be killing it in this regard. I REALLY wanted to get the Xperia 5 IV which seems perfect (S Pen notwithstanding). But the price...considering how much I make and how likely it is that I'd get robbed here...Note 9 FTW

My battery swelling take away my waterproof feature so now I can just as easily replace my battery and go one with my lovely baby. I thought about buying a Samsung S23ultra but since I now have to buy charger and headset from a seller(yes I use Bluetooth headset but always want to have a wired one next to me to just pop it in and go on using it) It kinda feels like it might be fake and be a fire hazard or something and just makes me uncomfortable. So Note20Ultra5g came to my mind.... but then why? Really! I have my iris scanner my LED indicator ( I love love love love it) and many other amazing features. So no thanks. I will wait for a merchandise that is fit to my taste. And if that doesn't come out well I'm gonna keep using my Note9 till I absolutely have to let it go.

I bought a samsung galaxy note 9 in 2019, now it's the end of 2023, my charging port doesn't work (I charge it through a power bank with the possibility of wireless charging), the back cover is broken, it's completely covered in scratches, the battery holds 2-3 hours of screen time and that's everything does not make me buy a new phone. but lately the upper speaker has started to feel bad and I often can't hear the interlocutor well, and when listening to media content it stopped working altogether....

start looking to buy a replacement and for a whole year I've been looking, waiting.. and can't find a phone worth my upgrade.

I think between such phones as: sony xperia 1 iv, samsung galaxy s23, iphone 13 pro. in my country, the price at which you can buy these phones is about the same for me. I still think I'll stick with Sony, because compared to other phones, I like it the most, but on the other hand, it's not a bad option for an iPhone, but I'm not sure that iOS will suit me as an operating system. samsung galaxy s23 is simply one of the most affordable non-stressful options for me after the note 9, but a rather boring option. In short, everything is very difficult, I am in despair and lost.

Your phone isn’t waterproof. It’s water resistant. And that water resistance fades as years go by. Get the battery replaced, and replace the water seal.

I had my note 8 for years until it finally died. I got a note 9 soon after. With a cracked screen I am tempted to get a new phone. I am in the market for a new phone, but without the headphone jack or without a stylist then everything is a downgrade.

It's a solid phone. I have a Z4 fold now and don't regret upgrading at all. I feel like people who base an entire phone off of something as trivial as a headphone jack or SD card slot are sinliar to the old man yelling at the sky about how things "used to be". I had a 512g N9 at launch and in the many years (in electronic years lol) I owned it I never filled it up. Never purchased an SD.

I have to agree this is the best Samsung phone ever made, hands down.
Right now there’s no a truly successor to this gem. Same thing with the S10 the last of its kind.
Probably the only smartphone that could replace the Note 9 in current market is the Xperia 1 V ONLY IF you are willing to sacrifice the S-pen.
Headphone jack, micro SD support, gorgeous display, really good battery and thermals, superb manual cameras, and NO notch just like the Note 9.
But that’s expensive AF.

Agree with your thesis, but you're wrong about waterproofing. Note 9 is not waterproof. It has water resistance but even that is not covered by a warranty. It's really no peace of mind and Samsung ended up having to pay a huge settlement for exaggerating the protection that an IP rating provides. I agree with your overall thesis but you're definitely falling for some marketing nonsense when it comes to so-called waterproofing

Almost 5 years using my note with 1tb storage (512gb internal and 512gb microsd card) 8gb ram. Only downside is I have burned-in spots in my screen and the battery is not so good anymore. Everything else works properly. My previous favorite phone was the note 4 with the ir blaster. Camera of the note 9 could have been a bit better, for that reason I will eventually have to upgrade

I used the shit out of this phone for 3 years. I still had 85% battery capacity. Only stopped daily driving it when a super aggresive offer came in for the Fold 3 where I got a heap for my old iPhone for work. The Fold is the best tech I've ever paid for. Really the next big step forward. However the Note 9 was a beast. It never once crashed, froze or stuttered. The display 5 years later is still insanely good. I decided to hold onto it because the trade in money for it simply would not provide enough loot to replace it with something equal or better. My only gripe with the phone as a daily was the weight. With a case it really feld like a brick after holding my buddy's Note 10 which felt like a feather. And my secondly only gripe is that I had to replace the tempered glass protector over a dozen times over the 3 years with those pricey White Stone UV screen protectors. One time I caught the subway turnstile with my phone in my jacket pocket and it cracked the screen protector the day after replacing the screen protector. Eventually I started buying these generic brand versions of UV tempered glass protectors and they weren't any worse and much cheaper. I use the Note 9 as my default Dex device paired via type C hub with a 15.5" OLED portable 1080p monitor for $190 USD (no touch screen though). The monitor is the ultimate accessory for an old Note 9 you just need a decent mouse and good LED keyboard. Just make sure once Dex is launched go into the Dex settings while in Dex mode and under "Dex Settings" go to Mouse and Trackpad and change the position so that it recognizes if the Note is on the left or right of the external display. That way the mouse will move seamlessly between the phone and the monitor. Also cool for the external Dex monitor, you can use Zoom turning the Note 9 around to act as your webcam while you see the Zoom call on the external monitor. No need to use the poorer selfie camera.

My note 9's screen broke some time after the beginning of lock down. It was a blessing in disguise cause It forced me to take a look at just how stupid the phone market got. To the point that last year I decided to get the screen fixed. The fix cost me the same as a modern medium-tier phone and they also gave it a new battery. Phone was like new last year and it's quite great at the moment. Also, I've had it exposed to quite a bit of water and it didn't seem to have any issues in that regard. I plan to continue using this one for another 3 years at least.
