Chanel crowns Paris season with a botanical ode to fall

VIP guests left the urban bustle at the door as they entered Paris' Grand Palais to discover towering deciduous trees, dewy scents and the rustling of dry leaves at Chanel's spectacular ode to fall.
On Tuesday (6 MARCH 2018), the house's designer Karl Lagerfeld crowned the fall-winter season on its last day by creating a giant autumnal forest.
The fresh air was a welcome for fatigued fashionistas - which included Keira Knightley, Carla Bruni, Jay Chou, and U.S. Vogue Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour - as they reached the finish line after over 70 city-based collections during Paris Fashion Week.
An autumnal palette in the clothes mirrored the oaks leaves that completely covered the Grand Palais salon, and the intricate green moss that lined broken branches by which the models strutted.
Green, black, beige, gray, russet evoked the months of decay - and sections of blue, the hue of the sky that might peak out between the clouds.
Huge statement scarfs in vermilion and saffron added a touch of seasonal humor.
It produced a veritable fall collection.
Fuzzy leaf motifs - such as beech, oak, sycamore - were used decoratively on oval or A-line coats that glimmered with metallic thread. Wide coppery pants had a sheen that evoked morning dew.
But history is never far from Chanel, the storied maison, founded in 1910.
The fashions of that era were softly referenced in a series of fully covered gowns in rich fabric with high Edwardian collars, fastidious embellishments and myriad jewellery.
A fur cape in brown and gray with an imposing triangular silhouette looked Russian and imperial.
