Gaming on Linux: Performance tests, Ray Tracing, Compatibility overview

This video just feels like the developer hating on linux. We know linux is not user friendly because linux is not for everyone, not every noob can download and install and and expect to use linux like how they would with windows. Linux is developed for a specific use case and user category. It is not the most user friendly out there. As a Linux user , i will tell you that you cant just install and use linux, it comes with a long learning curve. You have to use and troubleshoot linux and alteast understand how linux works to be able to use it properly. It is obvious that the Maker of the video has no absolute idea what he is doing, since he couldn't even get mangohud to function properly. Ray Tracing is very easy to use in linux. U just need to know how to. As for screen recording , there are many software which has no performance impact whatsoever. Please learn about linux before bashing on linux like this.

I am shocked when I try my game on linux has better fps and more stable. I wish linux could be more gaming

@HardwareLab: Guys, I'm in the middle of watching your video. Currently in the performance testing section. It is hard to watch because you are using an AMD GPU and some Windows games are optimized for Nvidia. The Witcher 3 is one such game and I suspect Cyberpunk is another (I don't own CP2077). This makes your findings bias when comparing Windows to Linux. I know that you are running a split screen and its a lot of work for the video you produced but you really should, IMO, redo the video. Redo the video with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs of similar strength, and call out the games that are biased/optimized toward AMD or Nvidia. Also, this will add additional work, but I suspect you would encounter less issues with Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon or Pop_OS 22.04 with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Thank you for putting in the work for this video. I'll be viewing the part 2 after this video.

dual booted pop-os on my pc as a way of dipping my toe into linux gaming. I like that it had a separate install for nvidia gpu. I had some hassles getting steam working, getting my ps4 control working properly over bluetooth, etc. but I had no trouble with the gpu. if I switch to amd in the future I might try something else.

ok but what about cyberpunk ray tracing performance. you had them off if im not mistaken. try to have them enabled and tell me about how it goes. i got it working but not with good performance. im trying to see if i can get it to run faster.

Unpopular opinion : Manjaro which is Arch based is the most noob-friendly distro out there.

I use Mageia 9 for gaming on my 2 gaming pcs. It works great!

With fedora 38 should more stuff work because it's SELinux rules are newer which could fix some games crashing

kdenlive is the best option....if u dont pay xD davinci resolve need a huge computer to work

I think without looking at any data, the assumption is that when converting a higher level api to a lower level one, you will typically get better performance. Meanwhile, converting from an already low-level api to another low level api will introduce additional instructions which will result in slower performance in most cases. So in most cases, dx8,dx10,dx11 to Vulkan will result in better performance, while DX12 to Vulk will often result in worse.

Linux Gaming Development is advancing at a very fast pace. The important point is not max fps but consistent fps. So please redo the test with RADV_PERFTEST=gpl in recent mesa. This should eliminate most if not all stutters.
Ray tracing translated from dx12 on the other is still in development though.

ok but why isnt both cpu and gpu at 99& usage on windows? doesn't that mean that the games running on windows arent gpu bound nor cpu bound, hence giving better fps and frametimes?

Simply wrong about music creation software not being available on Linux. There are both open source (Ardour, Qtractor) and commercial (Bitwig, Reaper) options.

Very well made video, detailed information about many things and everything expected to be there as graphs is there, but from the comments it is just obvious that you are a big fan of windows and that you don't like linux.

screen recording is terrible ion linux.

Nobody ever mentions the launchers. I tried fedora for a while after steam deck released, and I was mostly 50/50 on being able to run games. The games with launchers and anti cheat were always the biggest problems as it adds an entirely different layer to the stack required to run said game.

for general use, i use solus plasma these days.... very stable and a rolling release ;)

Why not using a game distro? it's my opinion but I think fedora for gaming not the best option

80% of problems in linux is some package (library) missing... 10% is incompatible versions between packages... and another 10% is some config missing, usually needs edit some files.
Use arch linux based distro... has the largest number of packages, i recommend: arco linux, biglinux and garuda linux (both pre-configured, with UI game configuration and instalation tools )

But Arch is absolutely not against proprietary binaries. In fact it's almost the opposite.

Also Manjaro is not more stable than Arch, in the sense of not having issues - lol! Arch is very stable, where Manjaro has had a lot of issues. And if a game runs in Manjaro, it will for sure run on Arch since Manjaro doesn't really do anything that changes how a game runs.

M$ is in a bit of trouble when it comes to gaming in Windows. The Steam Deck has changed the game by now enticing devs to support Linux natively. And it's only going to get better and better. They will slowly begin to lose market share from gamers.
They're only way to combat this is Game Pass.

I remember disk from game magazine containing demos and there were linux ones too. Some wild west shooter game was also playable on windows. I guess that were just windows app with vine in a neat package. I was too young and i have no idea where those disk are and no PC with DVD drive anyway.
Also you don't need a linux to run DXVK. At least in the case of GTA IV that is just dropping a file to the game folder.

After all these year's Clear Sky is still a looker, just like with HL 2, art style and lighting makes all the diffference

I am happy to report in Shadow of the Tomb Raider it now runs smoothly in DX12 VKD3D at a fashionable 163 fps at these same settings from the video only difference is Im on a Ryzen 5 5600X which shouldn't make that much difference if any

I assume the quality difference observed is from differing screen recording software/settings, and that it was not running during the testing that gave the numbers?

Should probably do an update video. Gaming only linux has gotten so much better with Nobara project. Probably the best linux gaming distro currently. Made by glorious egg roll himself
