The deaths and stuff aside, I was thinking maybe the cargo was extremely valuable, so the Silver Star moved it onto their ship, and then there was an “accident” that blew up the other ship “along with all the cargo.”

If it was a clandestine operation, possibly there was submarine keeping tabs on the boat, sees the ship come aside, board it and then tow it. Crewmembers sneak aboard, start a fire, then torpedo the ship or set off charges that were placed there earlier? Just a thought. Doesn't explain the cold areas of the ship though.
