One time I used that rlly bad wood chip bedding for my rats and they died.

ohhhh fuck no... have you not seen the study where it shows that paper bedding accumulates ammonia at several TIMES the rate of wooden chip bedding? it is quite literally more harmful to keep your rats on paper bedding than it is wood bedding. paper bedding is not fit for rats - it is not even completely fit for mice, and should only be used with mice in mixed quantities with a more natural wood bedding. getting kiln-dried wood bedding is the way to go for any small mammal, and if you really need to get the dust out, shake it between two colanders before putting it in the cage. and just because the bedding doesn't smell, doesn't mean there isn't a harmful level of ammonia in it! ammonia can be at dangerous levels and still not emit a smell.
(fleece isn't much better than paper bedding and is only suitable for use in short term hospital cages because it also accumulates ammonia at an extremely fast rate, and does not give rats the chance to dig and burrow which is important to their nature as fossorial mammals.)

Anyone know of a good playpen that rats can’t chew through? I got a zipper one on Amazon but they chewed through in 10 minutes.

I’d let them free roam penless but I have things I can’t have them chewing on at all that can’t be moved. I also have a senior cat and even though she hasn’t tried so far to get at them, I don’t want to risk it.

This is great minus paper bedding! Dust can cause issues but ammonia is way more likely too it is TOXIC use a kilm dried Aspen shavings work amazing

As someone who works at PetSmart and does the small animals deep cleans, stay away from “dust free” paper bedding too, they are NOT dust free! It makes me sneeze so much and I have colored residue in my nose 😂

Wood is perfectly fine as long as its heat treated. Most breeders use wood shavings, as well as labs. Wood shavings meant for animal bedding use aren't going to damage their respiratory systems

I feel really bad for my rat :( i only have one because in the shop his whole family got adopted exept for him and theyve been out of stock everywhere except for half way across the country- we might get him a little friend or two soon though luckily if we act quick next month

Pro tip:
Let the rescue/shelter/etc. Give you a "premade" group. Its easier for new owners than trying to build your own group. Works for pretty much any social animals. 😎

Lol, chaos potatos! I love it!

I have 2 rats

My two rats are twins and they do NOT act the same, Cocoa, she has white and light brown splotches for her coat, she is energetic and LOVES climbing, climbing for food, climbing to get out and most importantly climbing for tag, that's her fav game, tap slightly over their tails really lightly and they WILL get the zoomies.
Next is my baby, Remi. She is an angel, she loves cuddles, but when we try picking her up she hates it and says, no bitch, put me down. She is okay with tag, it's not her fav, but her FAV thing to do is sleep. And cuddle random people in their shirts. Uh, yeah. All she does is sleep, or fight with her sister. We let them fight sometimes when we know they're just playing anyways. Remi's fav thing to do is also make a lot of noise and fight with her sister at NIGHT, like I turn on my flashlight then they think it's time for food. They're both annoying. The only thing they're good for is cuddles. (Just kidding) anything other than that they will fight with each other, one thing they have in common is they Love food. They cannot be apart from food, it's all food. Remi's fav snack is corn and Cocoas is Watermelon. Anyways, idk why I'm saying this I just got off track, so love the girls, they are adorable 🥰

Heyo! Just a little bit of advice if you get one rat! #11 if your getting one pet rat give it TONS and I mean TONSSSS of affection,attention and most important love! So it doesn’t get lonely or depressed!
