NEW: New 3D and Materials in Illustrator

How do you add 3D and Materials to Adobe Illustrator 2021 with a 2,50 version?

He missed how to map text on a cylinder for example. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out. I was able to put text on a cylinder but in no way move it around on that cylinder. This video really only showcases a bunch of textures to apply to text and some extrude stuff. There's nothing on YT explaining how to control mapped text on a 3D object. Sad.

When I select Effect | 3d & Materials option on my vectorized text, the resulting effect is an absolute blobby mess that bears no resemblance to what you get. It probably would have been better to create some simple text from scratch, then apply this effect so everyone can replicate your results.

Okay but how can I map my own (created by me) pattern on to 3d objects?

I have been playing with both 3D classic I and the 3-D material panel I still like the map art in the 3-D classic because you can control your material versus the new way where you can control on canvas I think in the future we should have an option of both of. Thanks for the great video 🙏

This is a great tutorial! Thanks for the training. I hoping you can help me solve a problem. The problem I keep running into is Illustrator is not giving me options to change the color on my material. When you apply the blue marble paint material it give you 4 paint colors you can change. I apply the same material but it doesn't give me any color options. Do you know what this might be?

For some odd reason I am unable to find 3D & Materials under Effects. Any tips on where I can find it?

Great video! Question though, in the past you could expand appearance to make the shadows a solid shape. Is there a way to do this now? It seems to rasterize the element/shadow now.

Nice presentation! And the new panel sure seemed great! But where can I find something like the old perspective slider? 3D forms without accurate perspective is almost useless to me.

Doesn't seem like I can expand these after expanding the appearance for further editing. Unless I'm missing something.

If I have an illustrator design I just want to add material properties and texture to can I do that? Example, I have designed a vinyl sticker and want to add a gloss finish to it to simulate a mock up. Can I just make my image shiny? Or is it all animal prints and wood floors?

Is there anyway to remove the effect? I used inflate on a object and did not like the result but every time I try to undo ut with c+z the program crashes :(

Well that is... quite a dissapointment really.
I mean once you actually try it out it looks nice but is a lot less flexible.
If I want my own (simple) textures I get to download and figure out a new program I have no real other use for?
And after all that I have to export and load it from there? With no way to map it correctly?
Plus no perspective settings?

Put this one down to "It's not nearly feature complete yet but we thought it looked so cool we already pushed it out anyways" basket...

I wish you could use the materials made in Capture for this. Also wish the final product with materials was vector.
