How to fix Connection timed out message while sending email in Mac® OS X™

My Apple computer is stuck on this error message. It won't let me close my mail app or anything. I followed your steps and still the "cannot send message" error window won't close. I wasn't even trying to send an email, so I don't understand how this issue came up. :(
