I know, necroposting blah - what kind of pisses me off about the current state of gaming is that there's no real understanding that gamers deserve a fair challenge, but that some of us also need help.

I'm no IGN journo myself, but as someone with a disability that impacts my reflexes, Doom Eternal is a game I have to play slowly and very methodically. Watching me play, you'd realize the only difference between myself and a journo is that I actually take time to line up my shots. The problem is it costs me a few lives, and necessitates that I take some time to sort of bend the level's flow of enemies to my needs. For me, that's a long time, and several deaths - even on the easiest difficulty.

You see the problem, of course: I like Doom, I love Eternal's persentation, the lore that's involved, and I understand why most of everyone else likes it fast and challenging - and I even understand why watching a games journo struggle through the simplest concepts is frustrating - but I can't play up to your average twitch gamer's level. I manage Soulsborne games fairly well, but only because they're exactly the sorts of games that reward being careful and planning things out.

Considering, I've had to give in and finish Eternal with a trainer. After a while, I just got tired of being kicked to the curb and wanted to see where the story was going. So-called "baby modes" are great for disabled players, because it at least gives us a taste of what everyone else enjoys.

It's just a little sad that Naughty Dog's the only dev I've really seen give two shits about accessibility-related tweaks to core gameplay elements. The guys behind Celeste were the only indies I could find with a ton of handicap adjustments that didn't feel like the game was talking down to you for using them.
