Krank = sick
Krankenhaus = sick house = hospital
Krankenschwester = sick sister = nurse
Krankenwagen = sick wagon = ambulance

It’s true; many words in German really are just other words thrown together-

Kranken- sick person

Wagen- car

Krankenwagen- sick person’s car
