I dunno if there's an updated video on this yet, but blender has added yet more stuff for this. It's now possible to use it for printing the type of stuff you'd usually use CAD for.

Hi there:

A very powerful and FREE software, similar to SolidWorks or AutoCAD, to create CAD models is RS DesignSparks Mechanical (currently 5.0). Give it a try.

Thanks & greets from Argentina.

Definitely sounds like something I can fill my spare time with outside of painting miniatures and gaming. Will eventually get a photon mono as there's other models I want to print but it definitely would be another fun experience to have. Thanks for the video man!

I tried Blender for 3d printing about 2 years ago and it was absolutely USELESS at producing printable models - doing subtractions for example would often lead to leaks in complex shapes, that were impossible to fix. The 3d printing plugin at the time was completely unable to help with this. I'd like to hear from someone who actually designs and 3d prints stuff - has Blender improved? Is it worth trying again? Else I'll stick to Fusion360.

Also, what kind of paint to use?

great video thanks. I'm teaching a class on 3D fabrication and sculpture. I will share this video with my students. One suggestion is to also discuss how Blender and 3D printing is also used in the field of fine art and sculpture.

no it's useless for 3d printing (like all other 3d modeling software)
it's great for 3d modeling.
it can't generate Gcode that the printer can understand, a 3d printer would have no clue what to do with anything any 3d modeling software spits out
pretty much any modeling software that can export an OBJ (so all of them) will do if you understand how to build what you wanna build, it's just another tool in the pipeline to get to a finished print.
the only part of that pipeline I would call "3d printing software" is the slicer that generates the Gcode .. so Cura, Slic3r, prusa slicer etc.
for real world practical models you would be better with something like Fusion 360 (also free) or solidworks and in my experience for making organic models that will translate well into 3d prints nothing can touch Zbrush

I combine fusion 360 and blender, I find fusion much easier and intuitive to create dimensionally accurate and interlocking parts, but blender is much better for finer details and various "accessories"
