Last summer (2022) the fashion show on the front lawn turned the town upside down. The neighbors were really unhappy about this poorly planned event about 4 blocks from the center of town and across the narrow street from their homes. It did not put the foundation/charity in the best light, which is a shame. Madame Walker's business skills would have done things differently. She did manage to get her home built in a town run entirely by rich white men in the beginning of the 20th century, after all.

Her work was impactful and powerful. She deserves her flowers. However she was not at all the first Black female millionaire. Saying she is “one of the first” is more accurate. Her story is just deemed to be the “most marketable”… whatever that means. Because we focus so much on her story, we were never taught the stories of other amazing Black female entrepreneurs at that time.

She is true inspiration that when born out of poverty you can pick yourself up and create the life you want despite the racial and sexist barrier that still exist in America in her time era and now. Madam C. J. Walker is a legendary businesswoman.
