What I don’t like about Bernstein is that he used to conduct Beethoven’s master pieces in a slow tempo :(

I was told as person grows older their ability to hear the high and low notes diminishes. So I am testing my new hearing aid on my Roku TV. (At age 78 soon to be 79.

Too slow for my taste, the Bernstein NY version is just a tad quicker but it makes a big difference, IMO.

2nd and 4th movements are deep in my heart. I appreciate 1 and 3 as well, but man, the others just speak at a different level.

Leonard had a habit, which I love, of slowing down the compositions he would conduct -- many times, from their original timing . . . to a tempo that would not only cause the piece to last longer ( thereby allowing you to 'soak' yourself more in the music ) but it would, often times, cause the composition to sound almost ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from how you might be used to hearing it performed.

Tempo is at the Conductor's discretion...so, any Conductor can do this -- but Bernstein REALLY, really loved classical music & he elected to do this with ALL of his major pieces -- so much so that they will sound quite different than you are used to hearing them performed by other orchestras nowadays. Conductors, today, have a habit of rushing, it seems.

But his love of music...you could pick up on it while listening to his conducting; it was slow; it was melodic; it was SEXY !!!. He absolutely adored music and he was in NO HURRY to sound like other Conductors sound or to have his orchestras perform the piece the same way that everyone else is already used to. . . . & it surely shows in the way that he almost made love to the music (I know that sounds, almost, crazy) by playing back or conducting his orchestras to slow the tempo, so the listener can luxuriate in the piece for longer. What an amazing artist this man, truly, was. What a legacy he left behind for all of us.

If I'm not mistaken, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is playing. I know the musicians, I saw everyone at Beethoven's fifth concert performed by Pollini and Karl Boehm in 1979

Bernstein hammed it up as usual on the podium with wild baton gestures, leaps, knee bends and hip thrusts, while the musicians barely gave him a passing glance.

I think that karajan was better at making opera recordings though. But bernsteins live film of beethovens fidellio is fantastic. That truly worked a treat .
