spectacular version of one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
ОтветитьProcol Harum should be in the R&R Hall of Fame.
ОтветитьGrande
ОтветитьOh no! Wenn ich das höre wird mir klar, wie alt ich schon bin. Und mir wird auch klar,
Das heutzutage die Musik längst nicht mehr die individuelle Stärke hat wie damals!
A Whiter Shade of Pale is considered their opus, but I prefer the chord progression and melancholy of A Salty Dog.
ОтветитьI have been in this song's thrall for about 55 years. It has piqued my emotions and my mind all that time, every time I hear it. I have read conjectures on what the lyrics are talking about, but all of them admit that they, ultimately. just don't get it. Then on the 20,075th day I had an idea. What if this song is the result of a young Englishman or two young Englishmen, steeped in the zeitgeist of a seafaring culture, contemplating the experiences, the fates of all those men lost at sea, ships that never returned, during the age of fearless naval exploration - young men contemplating the experiences and fates of other young men, of the same stock and just like them, in a bygone time.
I hear a vision of the blind faith in the captain, a fealty so deep they stake their lives on it. I hear a vision of the ruthlessness necessary for survival. I hear a vision of being lost at sea, days of searching and searching for something familiar, unquestioningly executing the captain's commands, and finally, gloriously, praise be, LAND! Land, never so beautiful! Land, never so loved or needed! LAND! WE HAVE REACHED LAND! We are safe. Thank God we have reached land......
But what vision then did the two young Englishmen next see? Only that no one survived, no one came home. The only thing to survive was a note written by a salty dog, left to reach out to the future, to tell the future the history of their unfortunate fate, the history of their tragically dashed hopes.
We get it. The genius of this song is that even though we might not understand each of the words precisely, we still get it. Now that's some real good poetry!
SIMPLY BEST MUSIC! CLASSIC, SZEVENTINI
ОтветитьNever get tired of it. Amazing.
Ответитьsalty dog = great album
ОтветитьBon voyage to Procul Harum lyricist Keith Reid, who has 'sailed for parts unknown to man.' He's left his amazing words behind for us, fortunately.
ОтветитьThe piano is so seductively simple, yet has all the incidental flats and sharps throughout the song, evoking an image of the bell on the deck swining back and forth while the ship goes down.

ОтветитьIn the fall of 2005, I found "The First Four" in the back of a Media Play, I was 18 at the time. I'd never even heard Procol Harum before, I just knew of them from Robin Trower. I heard this song around November of that year, and I didn't initially like it. I was so immersed in those albums though, that a few years later, I started seeking out all these songs again. Procol Harum has been my favorite band ever since, even though some of these songs took around 5 years to grow on me. Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates them.
ОтветитьO órgão Hammond do procol é fantástico.... é a alma da banda até hoje ..a voz de Gary também é algo incrível.....
ОтветитьLove Procol Harum. I'm listening to A Salty Dog now. ❤
ОтветитьSalty Dog
All hands on deck, we've run afloat
I heard the Captain cry
Explore the ship, replace the cook
Let no one leave alive
Across the straits, around the horn
How far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course
And no one left alive
We sailed for parts unknown to man
Where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold
Could match our captain's eye
Upon the seventh seasick day
We made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue
No mortal place at all
[Instrumental part]
We fired the guns, and burned the mast
And rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept
Our tears were tears of joy!
Now many moons and many Junes
Have passed since we made land
A Salty Dog, the seaman's log
Your witness, my own hand.

ОтветитьLearned early on as a musician a live performance of a song is best judged by how close it comes to the studio version. (i.e. Roger Waters&David Gilmour). Even without the benefit of full orchestration this marked the virtuosity of the band as a whole and that of each individual member.
