Great video!
ОтветитьWhy do I get so many catches when hollowing out bowl interior?
ОтветитьBrilliant just have to practice, I must admit I find my bowl gouges a bit frightening. Your video has helped, thank you.
ОтветитьI see you always wear a face shield; when I put mine on, I cant see what Im doing! I wipe the shield constantly, either because of debris, or fog from my breath. How can you see details? So, I just keep my face out of the debris stream, and my body out of the line of trajectory! Help!
ОтветитьYou make each pass look so easy. I'm sure it takes years to get the sort of touch you have. Thanks for your teaching.
ОтветитьFor mistake two, I tend to move the head stock near the end of the bed and stand there. Therefore, I can use my whole body to move the gouge.
ОтветитьKent, I am a novice turner in Sydney, Australia and having not turned a bowl since High School some 52 years ago I have viewed nearly all your videos and learning slowly. My major drama is forming a proper Mortise so that once turned around the wood stays in the chuck, I have had several fly off causing real dramas. After viewing your videos multiple times your instructions are really sinking in and making a huge difference in my work so a great thank you for your expertise.
ОтветитьJust started turning this week after watching your videos for about two months. Turned my first bowl yesterday out of a canarywood blank I had that I was going to carve with a ball gouge on my grinder. Came out okay but I don’t like the wood screw holes on the bottom from the faceplate. What do you use to secure your material to the headstock?
ОтветитьGreat video. I am having trouble with undercutting a bowl—when the opening is smaller than the diameter of the finished bowl. What is the best tool to use? I was making a small bowl with very hard wood (cherry and rosewood) and getting nothing but catches. I even tried a crook shaped scraper and that immediately twisted in my hands. Thoughts?
ОтветитьSuper helpful. What kind of wood is this? I just got a lathe and I’m trying to turn a maple bowl. I can’t remove nearly as much material as you do without catching. Is my piece of wood just harder than yours?
ОтветитьI appreciate the rudder imagery.
I’ve benefitted greatly from your website and am happy to find your channel.
Excellent tutorial, I have picked up a lot of useful hints and ideas to perfect my bowl turning. Thanks
ОтветитьThank you for the video. I don't claim to be a wood turner, I make quaichs and have to turn bowls so as to have an item to carve, if that makes sense. You've sorted out a recurring, ie, every time I turn a bowl, problem of tool marks. much appreciated.
ОтветитьThank you for such clear instruction. I'm a newbie and hollowing has been quite the challenge.
ОтветитьProblems with tear out outer edge of bowls, John
ОтветитьGreat video Thanks so much👌
ОтветитьHis courses are amazing and worth every penny!!!!
ОтветитьThank you. I'm a beginner and since I don't know what I'm doing this was extremely helpful 👌
ОтветитьCali-PER not Cali-BER
ОтветитьI'm confused, in one video you said to keep the gouge below the center on the inside of the bowl but here it looks like you are above the center!?
ОтветитьExcellent advice. Nice to see them all at once! Thanks for sharing.
ОтветитьHello. Great vid as usual. I just want to clarify the angle of the flute - when you say 90 degrees is that to the tool rest? And when you say 45 degrees that would angle the flute 45 degrees away from the 90 degrees towards your body? so zero degrees would be the flute pointing straight up relative to the rest? Cheers.
ОтветитьGreat teaching thank you for the instruction
ОтветитьThank you
ОтветитьVery good video Kent. I'm just starting to work on bowls instead of spindle turning. This covers a lot of issues I've struggled with.
ОтветитьWish I had paused after #4, instead of before. Created another wide mouth cedar funnel. Still learning. Getting to be an expert at repair.
ОтветитьThe outside of my sycamore bowl has fuzzies in certain areas after sanding. I can't seem to get rid of them.
ОтветитьIt would be great if you could add this to your complete bowl turning course. It shows a number of things from that course really clearly, but adds value by putting them in context.
ОтветитьLike all your videos emphasis on technique and safety 👍👍
ОтветитьBrilliant tuition, but my only problem is the reference to “degrees”,can you define?
ОтветитьThanks for sharing. Just starting out on this type of wood working. Please keep up the good work.
ОтветитьIs it normal for the gouge to leave a mark when opening it after the 90 degree cut it seems to always happen it's such a light mark but bothers me
ОтветитьVery helpful
Thank you
Thank you, Kent!
ОтветитьLathe videos love to talk about angles. Tool angles. They NEVER ever specify which of the three angles they're talking about. There are three: 1). The relationship between the tool and the floor - the handle up or down. 2). The lateral application to the work - the handle left or right. 3). The amount of cut at the tool point - the handle twist open or closed.
It is a frequent cause for confusion
Very well done. Clear instructions. Good video closeups to show tool position.
ОтветитьReally helpfull video for a beginner like me! very appreciated. I just started turning my first bowl, but have no bowl gouge as getting one where i live is damn near impossible. so far ive spun a blank and have the interior to do, and i wanted to ask would i be able to get away without using a bowl gouge?
ОтветитьThank you Kent, some really useful tips that will help me a lot. I like your style of instruction and will keep a look out for more of your work.
ОтветитьI have a small mirror to look intothe bowl while turning. That´s how I can see everything.
ОтветитьIf I stand upright how do I see what's happening? Shouldn't I be watching where the tool meets the wood? How do I know what I'm doing if I can't see it? Watch the cut?
ОтветитьKent, those of us who are new to turning appreciate you more than you'll ever know. Thank you
ОтветитьGreat videos, very informative. Thanks
ОтветитьYou sure make it look easy.
ОтветитьThanks for the great video. I’m transitioning from carbide tools to bowl gouges (I’ve only turned a few bowls), and this was really helpful. In fact I had an issue with tool marks from a carbide tool in the inside bowl center and now I think I know why - slow down!
ОтветитьGreat tips. Presented very well. As a new turner I sure appreciate Kent’s videos
ОтветитьIf you could please answer. Question. When hollowing a bowl when I see pros get the wood shavings follow the flute and shoot away.. is this possible to do with just having sharp tools and proper speed or does power of motor come into play.. i got my first new lathe 8 days back.. its dies today will not turn on it is fried. Its a variable half horse mini. It died on a 4 inch end grain bowl but my tools I got scammed on and paid for HSS but got high carbon.. I have new tools coming a few hss and a carbide. But I'm wondering would having a half horse motor make it so that that dramatic throwing of wood waste is impossible
Ответитьwhat is the angle of your bowl gouge,,,,do you have a video on sharpening,,,,,
ОтветитьI’ve only been turning for 3 months so although I have experienced all of the problems you stated ,the more times I watch your video the better the information sinks in.Because I do make at least 1 of these mistakes each time I turn a bowl on my midi lathe.
ОтветитьI am a beginner and addicted to your videos. These are so helpful! Thank you.
ОтветитьThat was a really good instruction, your a very gifted instructor!
